The 3-day Jungle Trek has been one of my favorite experiences in all of Indonesia. We were greeted by our 2 amazing guides Bram and Dee, right from the first minute they were making sure their guests would have a good experience. My group was 3 solo travellers and with the help of our great guides, we were all fast friends. We set off and saw so many orangutans! Truly incredible creatures, but what really makes the whole experience is the campsites you stay at overnight, the great food that they somehow conjure in the middle of the jungle, and the funny stories told around the dinner table. The hiking is challenging, you are truly in the middle of the jungle so be prepared for a real genuine challenge. Make sure you wear good shoes and bring a rain jacket. The rest, your guides will take care of. Thanks again to the wonderful people involved with this trek, it is not something i will be soon to forget. We wanted to do the one-day trek (around 7 hours in total), my girlfriend and I, in order to meet the orangutans of the Sumatran jungle! We wanted to do the one-day trek (around 7 hours in total), my girlfriend and I, in order to meet the orangutans of the Sumatran jungle! We first contacted Sumatra Orangutan Trekking through the contact form on their website. They responded very quickly and gave us all the information about the trek. Our guide came to meet us the day before the trek, in our homestay, to get to know each other and give us an introduction to this jungle, and the rules to respect during the trek, particularly regarding respect for animals. The trek went very well, we had the chance to observe many orangutans, always keeping a safe distance (which not all groups do). We were able to taste the delicious fruits that he and the other guide who accompanied us had prepared for us. Lunch is also included. The rafting trip back was great, we laughed and sang a lot! I recommend this company to anyone who wants to discover, one day or more (for the more adventurous), the Indonesian jungle and especially to see its magnificent orangutans. Looking forward to coming back one day, I hope!AMAZING EXPERIENCE! From pickup to drop off our 2 day Sumatran Jungle trek was wonderful. AMAZING EXPERIENCE! From pickup to drop off our 2 day Sumatran Jungle trek was wonderful. We were picked up at our hotel in Medan by Dedek who was so friendly and accommodating during our drive and met at our amazing accommodation 'jungle inn' by Dony who explained what the trek would involve. Our trek started the next day and we met Brema our guide who proved to be a wealth of knowledge as well as a helping hand when needed it. We saw monkeys quite quickly into our trek and orangutans but as a bonus saw a magnificent hornbill and ghost owl. Brema explained a lot about the jungle flora and fauna as well as being the preparer of lovely morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas. We were hit with a massive jungle storm and arrived at camp drenched but our guides kept our spirits high and entertained us during the evening. A gorgeous feast cooked at the camp by a lovely and equally entertaining chef was followed by card games and magic! Accommodation was basic but added to the fun of the jungle. Next day hiked out to river whilst singing the jungle treking song. Rafting back to hotel was amazing fun! Totally worth the sweat, rain and sore legs. An experience not to be missed!Dear Dony, dear Sumatra Orangutan Trekking team, thank you Once again for making our jungle trip truly remarkable!!! It was perfectly organised from start to end! Dear Dony, dear Sumatra Orangutan Trekking team, thank you Once again for making our jungle trip truly remarkable!!! It was perfectly organised from start to end! From the little indonesian welcome snack, which you provided, when we were picked up from the airport. To the awesome Ecolodge we stayed prior the jungle adventure. During the Trekking we learned a lot about the jungle, saw the amazing Orangutan and a lot of other animals (hornbill, waran, 5 different monkeys!!! We were really lucky) and we enjoyed the delicious food, you always prepared so nicely! After the quite exhausting hikes (did not expect the jungle to be so mountainous) we enjoyed the campsite by the river, with a refreshing bath. And my favourite the tubing back after 3 days of hiking, was just so much fun. After the jungle we earned a relaxing traditional massage and visited the popular sightseeing places in Medan. The whole package was the perfect experience for us! Can only recommend the tour with these guys. We did the 5 days private package trip, including pick up and drop off from medan, 3 days of jungle trekking, massage and sightseeing in the end in Medan. All the best and we will see us again. We had an incredible 4 day trek and I would highly recommend this experience to anyone. This is a completely locally owned company which is great. The treks are very sustainable and the rainforest and it’s inhabitants are put first which was really important to us. There is a ‘leave no trace ethos’. Dony is the guy that sorts everything out and he was fantastic. He called us when we first messaged on WhatsApp and got it all arranged. He arranged transfer to bukit lawang and accommodation. He met us when we arrived and was super friendly and knowledgeable. Our guides, Ali and Ariel (definitely spelled wrong) were just incredible. They knew everything about the jungle and have both had lengthy careers working in wildlife conservation, anti-poaching and guiding. Their knowledge of the flora and fauna was so impressive and it was really interesting to discuss things such as conservation/poaching etc within the context of life in the local area. The accommodation is basic, you’re in a tent in the jungle. But it was a once in a lifetime experience waking up to the sounds of gibbons and seeing all sorts of critters in the campsite. The food was surprisingly good, everything was delicious and there was great variety. They catered for vegetarians including tempeh. The water you drink on a few day’s trek is boiled water from a natural spring, I would suggest bringing water purification tablets if you want to be extra safe and haven’t traveled in Asia for long but we were all fine! We saw loads of orangutans it was awesome. Doing the longer trek allowed us to go further into the jungle. On the first day there were lots of tourists around but as we got deeper in we were the only ones and we were slashing our way through thick jungle. We got to see some wilder orangutans a bit deeper in including the big male! The physical element is pretty tough. They will cater to the group but if you’re looking for a challenge they can make it very challenging! The jungle taxi at the end was really fun too. A great way to end it. Overall, definitely recommend! Thanks guys!We had an amazing experience with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking!! The owner Dony is a very thoughtful and caring guy. He planned everything perfectly. We had an amazing experience with Sumatra Orangutan Trekking!! The owner Dony is a very thoughtful and caring guy. He planned everything perfectly. If you are thinking about trekking in Sumatra, chose Sumatra Orangutan Trekking. You will not regret it!!! We trekked for 3 days and 2 nights and were lucky enough to see many Orangutans; including a Mom and baby and even a huge male! Our guide Ali was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable about the jungle and explained to us the different plants they use for local medicine, the animals in the jungle and the conservation efforts to protect them, and even told us jungle stories before bed. All the food was incredible. They fed us very well for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks!! Overall we had a fantastic experience. I’m hoping to return soon for a longer Jungle trekking experience!!
