If you want to learn how to cook local cuisine, take this class. At first, I was a bit apprehensive about taking the class since I would be by myself, but I’m so glad I did. I took the Nyonya cooking class and you start the day off by going to the market to buy ingredients and get breakfast. With those ingredients you learn to make 5 delicious dishes. Simon and his parents, Ms. Amy and Mr. Mok, made me feel so welcome, and the 5 hours quickly went by as we chatted about everything under the sun, or in my case, under the rain. I also ended up having a personal photographer even though I was by myself - thank you, Mr. Mok! This class is a great value and I would do it all over again. This was certainly a highlight of my Malaysia trip!I had such a great day with Amy and Simon. I felt very lucky that they did the class for me, even though it was a national holiday that day. I can't believe 5 hours went past so quickly, they were both welcoming and kind and I felt very humbled being able to cook with them and learn about their culture. The food was so good! I'm excited to try and recreate the dishes when home. I would definitely add this to your list of things to do in Georgetown. Whilst we cooked, Amy and Mok gave us further insight in Malaysian cuisine and culture. The food we made was delicious and something we plan to replicate back in Australia using the recipes we were given. We could not recommend this course more highly!Fantastic experience!! Fantastic experience!! I was keen to join a Hawker food cooking class whilst on a brief stopover in Penang. Simon and his mother Amy made the whole experience a standout day. From putting together a menu that accommodated my pescatarian diet, visiting Chowrasta market to taste & purchase ingredients, experiencing breakfast with locals and then great tuition on cooking authentic Nyonya cuisine - it has been the highlight of my visit to Penang. Simon and Amy looked after me so well and were so kind to extend their hospitality to visit the Penang Peranakan mansion & more. They went out of their way to provide a truly unique experience. We met Simon at the local market and were then taken for a light breakfast at a local coffee shop. we had specified the Nonya cooking class which is effectively a chinese/malay style of cooking.SImon's Mum, Amy is the chef and she guided us through the process and the ingredients used for our 4 course meal of starter Pai Tee (filled crispy cups) Inchi Kabin (fragrant fried chicken) Char Koay Teow (fried noodle) and Sago pudding. Simon was an engaging host and passionate about his heritage. Amy was a delight and was careful to ensure we got our quantities right. The food was delicious. My cooking class with Simon and Jenny was nothing short of exemplary. I went in thinking I would simply learn how to cook a simple dish and then eat it but what an experience it was. In the morning I met with Simon our leader at the local market. He had great insight and historical knowledge on the area which immersed me into local culture. After shopping and sampling things in the market we went to see how the dough we would be using was made. Afterwards we had breakfast at an incredibly local restaurant where we had fish ball soup and Roti Bakar. Once finished we walked to the kitchen and began our work with Jenny to make all the miscellaneous dishes. We were appropriately involved in the cooking and enjoyed learning the nuances of each dish. After cooking we all ate the food together and talked which was a very wholesome experience. After lunch Simon offered more of his own time to show us some of the town and provide so much more insight into how the island of Penang has progressed over the centuries. I had a great day with Simon and Jenny and would recommend you give them a shot.
