Stop At: Thanh Ha Pottery Village, Pham Phan, Thanh Ha, Hoi An 560000 Vietnam
Some call the Thanh Ha Pottery Village a ‘living museum’. Villagers have been making pottery here for over 400 years, and most still use a two-man pottery wheel. The kilns are red brick ovens built in the backyards of simple riverfront homes. So the smell of cooking terracotta permeates through town, thrusting visitors back to simpler times. The village is equipped with all kinds of activities for visitors including a museum with ever-changing exhibits and history, pottery-making workshops, a temple, and hands-on pottery-making experiences.

Kim Bong carpentry village is now located on Cam Kim lands, was built at the end of 15th century. It takes only 10 minute for visitors to sitting on ferry from Hoian ancient town to Kim Bong carpentry village, Cam Kim island commune. As soon as stepping foot on this land, we heard the sound of chiseling, drilling resounding from both sides in the west and east. The sound has become an integral part in the locals’ lives of many generations having been here for a long time.

Thai explained the fishing communities traditions and superstitions. We rode though the rice paddies and farmland stopping at weavers and potteries with a delicious lunch stop to refresh us. Ha was an absolute delight. Informative, happy, fun - more than a guide, she was a companion who shared her country, culture, society, community and joy with me. The day was full of activities and I never felt pressured to buy souvenirs at the places we visited. Ha was generous with her time and very open to discuss multiple facets of life in Vietnam - family, education, religion, lifestyle, life expectations etc. I felt I could ask her anything. I learned how to weave a mat and make rice noodles, helped mould a clay pot and took a boat ride (This was 110000 extra on the day and was very worthwhile) Great day.Exploring Hoi An by scooter proved a memorable experience. I travelled around with my guide Wendy (Thạch) and had ample opportunities to spend time with a mix of local craftspeople observing and participating in their work. Highly recommended.
