The guide will pick you up from your address in Belgrade at 9am (start time can be customized on request) and after an hour and a half drive through the heart of the Braničevo county, you'll reach the bank of Danube and the Golubac Fortress. This Medieval town is placed at the entrance of the Iron Gates and touches Danube waters with part of its walls. Straight from Golubac you'll continue down the Danube through the gorge and after 30 minutes you'll reach Lepenski Vir – the oldest organized settlement in Europe. The settlement was founded around 8000 BC and lasted till 4500 BC when people of Lepenski vir moved on. The archaeological site is in perfect condition and it consists of several parts. Uniqueness of this place, is the fact that the whole settlement was relocated from its original location retaining absolutely the same items and set-up from the time when people of Lepenski Vir lived there. On the spot you'll learn about the discovery, why the site was relocated and more about why this settlement is important for European civilization.

Continue the tour through the town of Donji Milanovac, towards the prettiest part of Iron Gate, gorges Mali and Veliki kazan (Small and Big boilers), two ravines which are the reason why the gorge is named the Iron Gates. From the moment we booked this tour direct with Serbian Private Tours via their website, to the follow up email after the tour enclosing the photographs Miljan had taken of us, we experienced a level of service second to none. I am a natural worrier and I emailed with a number of questions in advance and Miljan answered fully and speedily and put my mind at rest. You can tell the difference between a small family owned and run organisation (Miljan's wife sent the confirmation ) and larger ones: Miljan genuinely cares that you have the best experience possible and we did have an amazing day. The mix of attractions was well thought out - an impressive fortress, a most unusual archaeological site, the iron gate gorge and well worth doing the optional boat trip and finally a delicious buffet in an outdoor venue with the most wonderful views. I would recommend Miljan without hesitation.Wonderful day trip with a very knowledgeable guide. We went for a day trip during our summer holidays in July and the day started with a lot of rain & wind. Dragi (our guide) was fast to explore the options how to make our trip work but at the end we decided to stay with the initial itinerary and we did well! Dragi was knowledgeable and happy to answer any of our questions even when they were not related to Lepenski Vir & Roman period of Serbian history. The weather got better during the day so we went on a boat trip to Tabula Traiana (might need to be booked in advance) and the view of the beautiful gorge from the river on a sunny afternoon was fantastic. All in all we had a great trip, we felt that Miljan & his team took good care of us from the start till the end and we will be thinking of our next excursion with them next time we are in Serbia. From placing the booking for our day trip the communication with the team at Serbian Private Tours was quick and easy. From placing the booking for our day trip the communication with the team at Serbian Private Tours was quick and easy. I really appreciated Tamara checking whether we arrived in Belgrade safely and confirming arrangements - after 21 hours travelling from Melbourne to Belgrade it was one less thing I felt like doing. Our guide Vlada Jovic was great and he answered all our questions and provided excellent information not only on the places we visited but fascinating insights on the way of life in Serbia generally - very pleasant conversation during the car journeys. I must mention the boatman who took us out on the Danube too, very knowledgeable, hospitable, friendly and passionate about the Danube and that part of the country. Very much appreciated the highway coffee stop on the way back to Belgrade too! Would definitely recommend and engage with SPT again when I return to Serbia. Our guide was the owner Miljan for a 2 1/2 day trip of eastern Serbia that included the Iron Gate, Lepenski Vir, Monastery with wine tasting, home cooked lunch, Roman Ruin Felix Romana, and overnight in Nis. Our guide was the owner Miljan for a 2 1/2 day trip of eastern Serbia that included the Iron Gate, Lepenski Vir, Monastery with wine tasting, home cooked lunch, Roman Ruin Felix Romana, and overnight in Nis. While all the sites were interesting it was our time with Miljan (and others he introduced us to) which made the trip so memorable. If he got tired of answering my questions he didn't show it for when I stopped asking he was always ready with more information about his country and culture. If we lived closer to each other he'd definitely be in our circle of friends as we shared many perspectives about life and business. Highly recommend the company for an insight into Serbia whether you have a day or a week. With only a couple of days in Serbia, and wanting to experience its culture and beauty, I highly recommend taking the Private Day Tour to Iron Gate Gorge and Lepenski Vir and Golubac Fortress. With only a couple of days in Serbia, and wanting to experience its culture and beauty, I highly recommend taking the Private Day Tour to Iron Gate Gorge and Lepenski Vir and Golubac Fortress. I cannot believe how much culture, history, and scenery that we were able to take in during this less than ten hour tour. Our guide, Vlada, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. His personable nature quickly felt like we were with family taking us around and showing us our homeland. You can see pictures, but standing on the banks of the Danube looking at the divide between Serbia and Romania from a 14th century fortress that has been fought over for centuries, is an experience I will never forget. Visiting an archeological site from 9500 BC made our time in history seem very short. The opportunity to have a traditional Serbian lunch at the home of a warm and friendly local family is incredible. The food was delicious and plentiful (and accommodated our vegetarian diet). But most of all, I want to thank Vlada and Serbian Private Tours for providing this once in a lifetime journey.
