Stop At: Ancient City of Ephesus, Selcuk 35920 Turkiye
This enclosure for archaeological remains at Ephesus elegantly reconciles historic conservation with accessibility for visitors. The site of a succession of great ancient civilizations, Ephesus, on the south-west coast of modern Turkey, embodied a peculiarly fertile synthesis of architecture and culture. In 356BC the Greeks built the Artemesium (a colossal Ionic temple dedicated to Artemis the fertility goddess) which was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. During the 2nd century BC, Ephesus was the fourth largest city in the eastern Roman Empire, famous for its Artemesium, the Library of Celsus and its medical school..

Three hundred years after the death of St. John, a small chapel was constructed over the grave in the 4th century. Stop At: Meryemana (The Virgin Mary's House), Sultaniye Mahallesi, Selcuk 35100 Turkiye
House of Virgin Mary is located on the top of the "Bulbul" mountain 9 km ahead of Ephesus, the shrine of Virgin Mary enjoys a marvelous atmosphere hidden in the green. It is the place where Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may have come in the area together with Saint John, who spent several years in the area to spread Christianity. Mary preferred this remote place rather than living in crowded place.
The house of Virgin Mary is a typical Roman architectural example, entirely made of stones. In the 4th century AD, a church, combining her house and grave, has been built. The original two-stored house, which consisted of an anteroom (where today candles are proposed), bedroom and praying room (Christian church area) and a room with fireplace (chapel for Muslims).

The ruins of Ephesus were amazing! Our guide, Eda was very knowledgeable, friendly, and personable. She was able to guide us to experience Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary, the museum, and a few other stops on the way. She was a wealth of information about the sites and was also very knowledgeable about life in Turkey. She made sure we visited all the places of interest that we knew about and some that we did not. Lunch at the Carpet Making Co-op was awesome, sipping tea and learning about how these incredible carpets are made. All the people there were friendly and respectful. There were no high-pressure sales tactics, very refreshing. We would highly recommend this tour and Eda our guide. This was a very enjoyable day visiting all of the important sights and shops near Ephesus. Our driver was excellent and Nagi, our guide was exceptional. We learned so many interesting facts and saw the cultural highlights of Turkey including carpet weaving, pottery and food. Would recommend highly!

This tour was and outstanding experience. Our guide Erkan was exemplary. His patience, kindness, and knowledge made this experience undoubtedly even better than the sites already were, and I would recommend him to any group. Firstly, we were picked up by a private driver and Erkan at our hotel. Due to the poor car accessibility to the Old Town L’Agora Hotel we had a short walk through the alleys to the car. Once we arrived at the car the AC was blasting in the car which was amazing (it was 107 degrees). During our hour and a half long drive to Ephesus, Erkan spoke to our group the entire ride with a superior command of the English language. Erkan, being a local to a town nearby Izmir possessed a detailed knowledge of both the city and agricultural landscape. Our tour would travel to the house of the Virgin Mary, Ephesus, Turkmen carpets (for lunch), and St. John’s church. Throughout each site Erkan gave us detailed historical accounts and kindly answered our obscure questions. At each stop Erkan was conscious of providing cold water and stopping in the shaded areas to give us information about the sites. All in all the trip was amazing, but Erkan went above and beyond to be the best tour guide we’ve had during our holiday in Turkey. I would recommend this trip to any able bodied individuals, that are interested in ancient cities, religious history, mythology, and Turkish culture. Thank you ErkanThe private trip was amazing!
