We started our day being picked up by Rui. The first thing he said was "Rui like TUi but with an R" and as we booked through TUI I can tell you we won't forget his name easily. After this we knew we were in for a good day. On the way to our first stop Rui explained the day and what we were doing. He made sure all questions answered and was really chatty. First stop was Pico Alto to look out over Funchal and the surrounding areas. Rui explained what we were looking at and the different parts that we had driven through. After leaving Pico Alto we headed further inland and higher as we climbed another 800m to Pico do Arieiro. As we were driving there Rui was explaining what the words of the look out points mean, giving us background information, checking everyone was ok and once at Pico do Arieiro we were given 30 minutes, which is more than enough time, to look around and take a look at the stunning views with live pipe music from local Madeirans. From Pico do Arieiro we began to wind back down the roads towards Santo da Serra for our Levada walk. This was the beginning of the off road track experience. Rui encouraged us to stand up to have better views and he was right. The views were amazing and being off road was something we have always wanted to do. During the Levada walk Rui explained where the Levada started and how a Levada gets their name. He is a true wealth of knowledge and he was able to explain how our lunch, for those who orded beef skewers, would be cooked on Laurel sticks and that throughout the reserve these were protected plants. At the end of our Levada walk we took a 1 minute drive down to our lunch spot at the most incredible trout farm. Parque Ribeira Primeira is run by a family and those who wanted to catch their own trout was able to do just that in one of the several trout lagoons. This was a new experience to catch our own fish and we were lucky enough to have the owner with us helping. Once we caught our trout we were taken on a whistle stop tour of what it is to own and run a trout farm. He was so inspirational and you could clearly see not only the passion in his eyes but how he was engaging with us. He knew his stuff and even explained how to gut the fish and the difference in smell and colour between fish we caught there and the 'fresh' fish we buy in supermarkets. It would be an incredible school trip! The lunch was superb and all brought to your tables. The roof we were sat under was made from passionfruit vines which had naturally grown into a canopy. The whole place was centred around doing what was natural. After lunch we headed out towards the most easterly point of the island. We went through Santo da Serra, Machico, driving out to Ponta de Sao Lourenco. We drive down the first main road of Madeira and again Rui showed off his knowledge of the island explaining what the road was used for and his plant knowledge throughout. At the most easterly point we could see both to the north and the south of the island in one look. It was stunning! We got to take pictures and see a completely different climate to all the others we had experienced during the day and this ended our day of sightseeing. Whilst being dropped off at the different hotels Rui's knowledge continue to shine through as he explained about the airport runway and bollards, facts about Funchal, statues on roundabouts and different faces of people we had seen on billboards all around the city. Out trip was amazing but made so much better by Rui. He loves his job and is speaks so passionately about it. Both my husband and I have been inspired by him and his 4x4 skills to go on another 4x4 experience next time we visit the island. We couldn't thank him enough and his energy throughout the day is something we will both remember for a long time it definitely wouldn't have been the same without him. We cannot wait to go back and do another 4x4 experience. We had a great day out with Braz (who drives like a pro).we went up into the mountains where we had spectacular views.the offroad experiences were exciting.
