The tour was awesome, and Niki was fantastic. She immediately blending into and became a part of our family. Both Niki and the driver took special care to make sure we had a wonderful day, giving us the history on the drive from katakalon and taking us to see the entire site…… the ruins at Olympia are inspiring. We even ran on the track. The tour was perfect, the visit to the museum was great, and the stop for lunch was special. We found Niki through the Rick Steves travel book, and feel so lucky to have had her skillful guidance through both the Olympia historic site, and the magnificent Archeological Museum. Her extensive knowledge of Greek history and of the site is the foundation of a rich and satisfying walk through the site, as she unravels the story of what occurred here not once, not a few times, but over the course of more than 1000 years. With her help, the locations are not piles of toppled stones, but the sites of powerful and dramatic events, her words painting mental pictures as we stop to ponder the magnitude of what transpired over so many centuries. The subsequent trip through the museum was powerful, adding exquisite details to the mental picture she had painted for us as she led us through the Olympic Sanctuary. Along the way, what we learned about Olympia connected with the things we had been learning in other stops during these weeks in Greece. We so appreciated her knowledge, her skill in truly guiding us to better understand this amazing country.Based on a recommendation from Rick Steves we engaged Niki Vlachou as our guide in Olympia. Based on a recommendation from Rick Steves we engaged Niki Vlachou as our guide in Olympia. We were so glad we did. Our tour of the Sanctuary of Olympia and the Archaeological Museum were greatly enhanced by her knowledge and insights. It was obvious Niki had a deep understanding of Greek history not just for Olympia. She could relate the site to broader themes as well as to what we had already seen or would see during our visit to Greece. She brought to life the ceremony and function of the many elements of the Sanctuary. When we visited the Museum she effectively highlighted the exhibits that would deepen our understanding of the site. She did all this in an engaging and friendly manner. Truly a pleasure.Niki absolutely saved the day for us, managing to get even my less than enthusiastic preteen to engage and shed her morning grumpiness. Niki knows how to talk to all ages. She was a friendly peer to my husband and I, and as a mom, really knows how to engage with children. After many tours, thi...
Niki absolutely saved the day for us, managing to get even my less than enthusiastic preteen to engage and shed her morning grumpiness. Niki knows how to talk to all ages. She was a friendly peer to my husband and I, and as a mom, really knows how to engage with children. After many tours, this was by far our best one. Olympia was a surprise family favorite! We learned quite a lot with Niki, but most importantly had fun! PS - She recommends that you go early and you absolutely want to do this to avoid the cruise ship crowds.
