Private Tour of the Belvedere Palace with an Art Historian: "Pictures of Austrian Identities". Art & History Tour with Skip-the-line Tickets
Overview
The Genius Loci (spirit of place) is packed with details and you won't find them in quite as many places as in Belvedere. Do you want to discover what works of art from the different eras can tell you about the specific Austrian and Viennese identity? Then take a tour of the Belvedere and gain an insight into the different facets of the national character.
In Gustav Klimt's golden "Judith" and "The Kiss" we can explore why female sexuality is the focus of medical interest in Vienna. The troubling mood of Egon Schiele's "Embrace" and "The Girl and Death" can also help us understand why this city became the birthplace of psychoanalysis.
The ornate baroque decoration of the palace, the accent on the ancient heroic themes will explain the special imperial atmosphere of the city, in which the Viennese live and in which tourists so eagerly dive. And Ferdinand Waldmüller's pellucid paintings will try to enchant us by showing the famous "Viennese cosiness" and we have to make an effort to see what tragedies lie behind these well-marketed images.
The gilding of medieval altars and Klimt's golden masterpieces, the sparks of intellectual life and Viennese humour that glimmer through the sombre paintings of Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka - what really makes this famous palace's collection shine? And what exactly shows us the true face of the (former imperial) capital? The answers to these questions await you in the galleries of Belvedere Palace.

An absolute masterclass & a must do in Vienna. My wife and I enjoyed an exclusive private tour of almost 3 hours with Julia in the Belvedere. We learned not only about the art in the museum, but the historical context for Vienna and Austria as a whole. We did this on our last day in the city & were glad of that as we had a better perspective having already been in town for a week. This tour is not inexpensive, but worth every cent for those who have a curiosity about art, architecture and history. This Tour with Julia is definitely an unforgettable Vienna discovering through history, philosophy, and art. Highly professional, scientific, and fascinating tour. Absolutely recommend. Thank you, Julia, for a great tour!

Julia was great. She provided us with an excellent overview and history of the palace and plenty of the exhibits. But not just that. She wove an emotional narrative connecting the various pieces bringing greater meaning to it all. The tour felt as though we had an expert art historian friend guiding us through the Belvedere. We planned Vienna museums trips with Julia for 3 days in a row and if she would be available for another 2 days we would happily spend 2 more days with her. Julia’s tours are inspired enlightening and very engaging. She is absolutely one of a kind - extremely deep and knowledgeable yet she doesn’t bring you down on the contrary she elevates you to her level. This was our second time walking through museums of Vienna with Julia and we will absolutely be back for more. Touring art with Julia is like reading an amazing book where thoughts and guesses are illustrated with worlds most beloved and important paintings. Except you are looking at them on walls of palaces not on the book pages. Whatever your art interests are I promise you Julia will have the most interesting tour for you - all you need to do is ask.I booked this tour by the recommendation of friends of mine who had been to Vienna six months earlier and told me " This is a must." I booked this tour by the recommendation of friends of mine who had been to Vienna six months earlier and told me " This is a must." And I am so very grateful! This Belvedere tour was by far the most engaging and inspiring I have ever had. Julia carefully wove together political, cultural, and psychological aspects of art and made every minute of our tour a genuine pleasure. Thus I can confirm "This is a must-do in Vienna."
