A great night out, meeting fellow travellers, a guide with a good sense of humour, delicious menu, & tales of the locals. All in all an experience not to be missed.

I totally agree with other reviewers that it would have been better had smaller groups of visitors been able to join locals at their meal tables and share a snippet of their lives. However, having heard otherwise, I was prepared for something like the size of the group we had. THE WORST PART – IT IS EXTREMELY OVERPRICED! Islanders have got used to making a living catering to the progressive diners. Luckily for the operators many (most?) tourists do not realise what they are specifically paying for the Progressive Dinner as it is built into whatever package they have booked. Also, many travel as part of a group. In the end, if they have a good night with the company of their friends, they don’t notice the inadequacies of the night. Entrée – this was a good course of smoked fish with salad – tasty, health and nice appropriate portion served. Alison Christian was our hostess and she was quite entertaining. A bar selling a reasonable range of drinks at reasonable prices (as per advertising and voucher information) finished this venue off well. Tick of approval. Mains This was THE VERY DISAPPOINTING course of the evening! The meal was a small serve of some tasteless chicken wrapped in a a piece of bacon, served on what we were both sure was “Deb” instant mashed potato. The Baunti voucher information stated that a glass of juice or wine was provided, or we could take BYO. As my wife rarely drinks, we didn’t bother with BYO. Well, the juice was powdered Tang cordial, we are sure. The wine tasted like the worst home-brew we have ever had. When several of us commented to our driver that we were disappointed with the main, he replied that, “Yes, he had heard that before. He had told Baunti but they keep using the same host.” Dessert was quite enjoyable and left a better taste in the mouth than the main had. It was made the more enjoyable by the inclusion of some home-made ice cream, especially as ice-cream was not generally available on Norfolk at the time of our visit. Most visitors are happy to support the Norfolk Island economy but they don’t like being “ripped off” – serve us a good meal, and make it entertaining enough and we will probably forgive the high cost. Som operators seem to be acting on the premise that most visitors only visit once, so get what you can from them, while they can!We expected an opportunity for a small group of tourists to meet and chat over dinner with islanders in their homes. We expected an opportunity for a small group of tourists to meet and chat over dinner with islanders in their homes. We had seriously misinterpreted the promotion. There were 40-50 tourists on the bus, with an excellent driver, entertaining and muti-tasking to double as food waiter at the three venues. We filed into each venue, were served soup, main, pudding, talked to other tourists seated near us after each host had addressed the entire group on their lives on Norfolk Island and their ancestry. The hosts were charming, their talks were amusing and we appreciate the welcome to their homes, which were large, island style with dining long tables set up on wide verandas. The meal was generous but we could have eaten as well for half the price and had more meaningful interaction with locals at the bowling club.We didn’t expect so many people to be on the tour. We didn’t expect so many people to be on the tour. Just getting on & off the buses took a while. Our bus driver definitely needed to learn some new patter, I found him quite annoying. As there were 40 or so people filing into a home each time I felt like most of the night I was being herded. The food was ok, not bad but certainly not worth what we paid. Definitely bring your own wine. The hosts’ stories were interesting but just a presentation, not really interactive. We previously had a dinner with a local family in Scotland, 4 couples & the 2 hosts & all at their place. It was fabulous & we really felt we got to know a bit about the country & it’s history. I think something more like that would be really enjoyable.
