Puerto Viejo hands on chocolate making class. From bean to bar, get chocolatey!
Overview
In 3 hours you will travel through time: from the history of the tree, to the myths, to the very real and important part cacao and chocolate played in the cultures of Mesoamérica. And of course you’ll also be making chocolate. From trying the raw fruit to roasting, grinding and separating the shell from the nibs you’ll be working just like a professional making award winning chocolate. You’ll learn some of the amazing medicinal uses of chocolate before making your own chocolate ‘medicine’ to take home. Finally, you’ll temper freshly poured molten chocolate and you’ll make your own bar to wrap and enjoy later.

What a wonderful way to learn about the colourful history of chocolate! Ancel is a passionate storyteller of how humans and the precious cacao have evolved to the “modern” bar. A truly enjoyable experience. And a tasty one at that!!!

Ancel taught us about the evolution of cacao amongst humans, current production around the world, varying processes involved in making chocolate, and so many other uses of the plant. She has many other interesting things to share about the farm. We left with far more knowledge than we came with, and we really enjoyed connecting with the cacao, Ancel, and the other attendees. I highly recommend this tour and would even come back to ask all the questions I have then pondering since the tour. Very cool to return to our accommodations following the tour and immediately recognize cacao all around us...and know how to use it!This was, so far, the best experience we had in Costa Rica. This was, so far, the best experience we had in Costa Rica. The workshop was beyond our highest expectations- it was very informative, engaging, not rushed, hands on and FUN! Every person was engaged. We have learnt about history, chemistry, botanics and culture. We have learnt about the process and tasted some amazing chocolate. The workshop was in a small group and adjusted to needs of the participants. We loved rhe experience!Wow. Wow. I reached out to Ancel prior to booking to see if the tour and experience would be appropriate for my three small boys to join me and my husband on. My boys are age 2, 4, and 5 and full of energy. Not only did she allow our bunch to come, she offered to run a different class more specifically catered to keeping our young ones entertained, and had the class set up in a manner that was perfect for them. As a prior kindergarten teacher, she not only tailored an awesome class, but was super accepting and encouraging to our little balls of energy. They loved the chocolate experience, helping to prepare the beans and chocolates, and even play with the animals in the garden. A group of chicks even hatched while we were there. Such a fantastic experience. Such hospitality and kindness. Thanks Ancel for a wonderful day that we won’t forget. This is one of the best things we’ve done, anywhere. This is one of the best things we’ve done, anywhere. Ansel/owner is quite knowledgeable and is so connected to her farm and the products produced she is able to pass along that connection through each part of her class. Our kids(10&11), as well as us, were truly interested in and fascinated by what we learned. From tree to table, creating our own unique labels, and, of course, the delicious chocolate. Don’t miss this class! This class is perfect for chocolate lovers, whether you just want to eat chocolate or are keen to learn all about the process!
