We had a wonderful day. Our guide, Victor took us on an interesting drive to Sandwich Harbour followed by an inland drive to see the Welwitchia and Moon Landscape. Our guide was good company and very knowledgeable of the history, geology, human geography, fauna and flora. It was amazing to see seals, springbok, oryx and stunning scenery. Uwe was the guide for the day and he was an excellent guide! He was really knowledgable not only in history, but in geography, chemistry and biology related to the 2 places. He was really experienced, especially about the tides and thus we managed to visit the dunes via a route where the tide is low. By the afternoon, the fog appeared and the tides went up. Uwe was also an excellent driver too as he managed to maneuver around the dunes which seemed harmless but was actually dangerous. Sandwich Harbor was more of a desert safari where we went round looking for animals living in the desert. We managed to see a seal, springboks, 2 jackals, many flamingos, eagles, seagulls and pelicans. I also saw footprints of hyenas, jackals and ostriches. There was also a nara fruit plant present among the nara bushes. The dunes was stunning as it was my first time seeing dunes and the sea meeting together. We then head off to the Welwitschia plains where I looked forward to the Welwitschia plant. Currently there lies a 1500 one which left me in awe. The mountain scenery was beautiful too. We had great lunch and I enjoyed the pastries and the eggs. He also talked about some history and the plant life there e.g. the lichens and the algae. I do hope that more tree planting efforts would be done in the desert so that more wildlife can fluorish. All in all, it was an excellent weekend tour where I took a break from volunteering at Na'an Kuse. Now I can returned recharged and full of energy. If I could, I would give this 7 out of 5 stars. Thanks Uwe!Uwe is your driver and guide. He is extremely knowledgeable and experienced and comes with a charming character, He makes the Sandwich harbour tour a a friendly and cosy experience.
