What a thrill to have a professor of history to guide us through such a unique and sensitive arena. We started from Piazza Vittorio Veneto to the the austere church of 1204, its nave is unexpectedly high. Further on is the partly rock-cut San Pietro Barisano, another Norman foundation with a later facade, fromhere we trawled the streets where there were tantalising views over the town, its facade masking houses largely excavated in the rock. We returned to the piazz and followed Via del Corso which leads to Piazza San Francesco for a look at the panels from a polyptych by Bartolomeo Vivarini. The baroque palazzo Bronzini-padula past us we approached the splendid Duomo of 1270 raised on a terrace hanging over the heart of town. We wandered the narrow streets turning onto Via Ridola to the typical rococo extravagance of the south, the Chiesa del Purgatoria, its facade decorated with macabre motifs, with the interior happily intact. We continued to the line of the cliffs which is so memorable. Modern Matera is prosperous in a way so many towns to the south are not. It is visibly fragile. The eroded cliffs continue to erode, the rock-cut dwellings are not easily adapted to modern requirements. Much has been done to preserve this remarkable complex. Without protection we sensed that Matera disintegrates before our eyes.Even the the temps were very hot, we enjoyed our walking tour of this amazing city. So very interesting

This trek into a typically unseen area was awesome. We crossed down over the edge of the cliffs in wooded regions to visit 3 churches and other caves that were very special. Flora and Fauna was explained as we passed. Ancient cisterns and collection regions were also seen. Not another soul was seen all day so felt special indeed. Not an easy walk but if you like to explore nature, willing to step up on rocks and not afraid of pushing thru some bushes as trees have fallen over the path in areas, it is a great experience. Antonio knows the area well. It felt great to see beyond the built up Sassi Caveoso into how it this region looked for centuries.
