What to expect
You’ll find your new furry friends here in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive (73km) from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa, which is worth visiting for its culture and architecture alone. Our panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breathtaking and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy.
We are open year-round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughout.

This was such a wonderful experience, from start to finish. While we were waiting for the tour to start we wandered around the shop with all the beautiful Alpaca products. We ended up buying a beanie each, and even though it cost $NZ55 each, was so worth it. The wool is light and keeps your head warm without over-heating. Perfect. The Alpacas were a delight to engage with, starting with the older males, then moving to the females and younger Alpacas. All and any questions were answered, and information provided about the different personalities and how to approach them. There's nothing like hugging an Alpaca and having them lean into you. Feeding time was certainly interesting, the kids in the tour obviously enjoyed it. And the view from the top paddock is worth the cost of the tour alone. We loved this tour and would definitely do it again, the next time we are in Akaroa.We had a "private" tour around the farm as there wasn't any other booking besides us that day. Lydia (our guide) was fantastic in explaining to us everything about her alpacas. She was very knowledgeable and we could really sense her passion and connections with the alpacas! We had a "private" tour around the farm as there wasn't any other booking besides us that day. Lydia (our guide) was fantastic in explaining to us everything about her alpacas. She was very knowledgeable and we could really sense her passion and connections with the alpacas! Lydia patiently answerd all our questions and even shared interesting trivias of different alpacas. My wife and i enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and it was definitely worth the drive from Christchurch to Akaroa.
