Shore Excursion: Geothermal Rotorua with Maori Cultural Performance at Whakarewarewa
Overview
On the way to Rotorua, marvel at beautiful beaches and multimillion dollar homes, before a 45 minute drive from the coast slowly ascending up the central plateau, through Kiwifruit plantations (we plan to stop so you can see these vines full of fruit but not ripe yet) and typical NZ pastoral farmland to our furthest inland destination, Rotorua. Take in the most popular sites of interest - Blue & Green lakes, view Mt Tarawera (erupted 1886) across the most gorgeous lake, walk through NZ native bush full of ferns and tall podocarps like an 1800's pioneer or Maori warrior. visit the mud pools of Kuirau Park, take a peek at the geysers (incl. famous Pohutu)

Thanks Roger And thanks to the driver Kerry, he could not have squeezed more in even if he tried, kiwi farm short stop off point, managed to try different kiwi ice-cream. Kerry is very knowledgeable on local history and customs and stayed with us while at the Whakarewarewa Maori village. We stayed longer than we should in the village, so we could see the geysers at their full height, Kerry did he best to catch up due to the delay. Next stop 'Redwood' forest then onto a look out point the overlooks the lakes, after many pictures we were heading back to the ship. Grate day had by all.
An unusual experience visiting the active Maori village with its geothermal vents. An excellent day excursion.

Roger wastes no time getting in so much in one day. We saw a Kiwi farm, the Geothermal village, were Maori still live today. (with a guide from the village) and performance, mud pots, a waterfall, a nice place for lunch and even a redwood forest! You get your money's worth!

The bus provided was a last minute rental by the local tour group. No internet as promised small annoyance, no water provided big problem as we didn't bring any as this was also promised. Bus, tour driver kept saying it's a rental for the overflow, but why is this my problem? Worse, the bus group consisted of 3 different tours, no one completely sure of where they were going. Very very disorganized. Driver kept dropping off and picking up various groups waiting. We were never sure he was going to return to get us. One of the worst Viatour bookings I have made. Previous tours I have taken with Viatour were 100 better.
