La Fortuna Waterfall is located within Arenal Volcano National Park, where the temperatures are between 18° and 35° Celsius, which generates abundant vegetation and diversity of fauna. This natural monument is admired by more than 100, 000 tourists from around the world every year. La Fortuna Waterfall is generated by the waters of the Fortuna River and its small tributaries, which are born in the mountains of the park. Once you enter the Río Fortuna Ecological Reserve, the vegetation and the sounds of the fauna surrounding the place will be your best companions. The facilities have a small square, a viewpoint in the upper part of La Reserva, and accessibility for people with disabilities. From there you can see La Catarata at a distance of 200 meters.
The route consists of about 500 steps downward to get to the imposing Rio Fortuna Waterfall, where the peace and majesty of nature will make you enjoy its waters and the scenic beauty of this place. The path was recently remodeled, which also has comfortable rest areas.

We really enjoyed this experience even though there are MANY MANY steps down and back up again. We were glad we had Teva water sandals on as the rocks were a bit slippery getting in and out again. Wish we had had more time to spend swimming at pools downriver as we were told later that they were easier to get to and probably had warmer water. Also, this is for people who are good swimmers as the pool is rather turbulent. Plan to spend time here...wish we'd had more! There are 500 steps going down. We were tired then but now totally exhausted. At the bottom is the waterfall. A beautiful sight to behold. A refreshing swim in the clear cool water. On the left side of the falls is a quiet area teeming with large Trout. On the Tour we had 20 minutes to have a swim before making it back to the Bus. Be careful on the rocks, theyre slippery and the water is a little cold at first but you get used to it quickly!

Asking for this an entry fee of 18$ per person is quite a lot and not something I would recommend if you are looking after your money. Try El Salto instead which is an equally nice experience totally for free.We bought the “skip-the-line” pass but honestly we didn’t need it - perhaps due to the timing of when we went (around 12pm). We bought the “skip-the-line” pass but honestly we didn’t need it - perhaps due to the timing of when we went (around 12pm). The waterfall was beautiful and even though there were quite a number of people there everyone was respectful and allowed others room for pictures/swimming. I will say the warnings are legit - it is tiring climbing back up those stairs but they are kind enough to put seating at different points if you need to stop for a breather.
