We bought a $99.00 family pass and enjoyed our time at ShantyTown. The weather behaved itself so we were able to walk the tracks as well

Great little park to learn the history of the west coast of New Zealands south island. Shaped into a small town the builldings comprise a large range of shops you would expect to see in such a frontier township. It exist on an old timber industry site with the original train line. Your entry ticket includes the train ride so take full advantage of it. Our conductor was very friendly and approachable if you had questions to ask about the heritage centre. Look out for remnants of days gone by and a disused branch line as you ride the train. Depart at the saw mill to walk back (down hill) through more interesting buildings, information displays, plaques and if you want, pay a small fee to try your hand panning for gold. Don't forget to go to the railway sheds to veiw the blacksmith shop and other locos on display, they may appear to be out of the way and not for public viewing but they are (just a lack of signage there. There is a cafe within one of the buildings and, as we did, take the time to have a break off your feet and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat. A worthy stop.Overpriced, underwhelming, rubbish, the only staff on duty were taking you’re money. Save your money go unicorn 🦄 Spotting instead.no pot of gold here, 6 hour round trip from Christchurch for that? oh did I mention it’s overpriced
