What to expect
The Grant Room: Enter our main gallery and explore the dramatic 200-year history of the Regiment from the Napoleonic Wars, India, Afghanistan and South Africa, through to both World Wars and the Cold War. Interactive maps, original film footage, scale reproductions, life-size models, touch screens, regimental colours, uniforms, medals and weapons are all featured to bring the unique history of The Gordon Highlanders to life.
The Armoury: Step into the Armoury and come face-to-face with an impressive display of edged weapons, firearms and medals from Napoleonic times to the present day.
The Silver Room: Regimental Silver. Silver played an important part in the traditions of the regiments of the British Army. Officers’ and Sergeants’ Messes had their own silver, of which they were very proud. This was acquired in various ways; as booty (in the early days); bought from Mess funds (subscriptions from members of the Mess); donated by other regiments; or donated by individuals, usually to mark a significant event such as promotion, marriage or resignation. The silver would travel with a regiment or battalion, wherever they were stationed, and be in regular use in the Mess. Although silver was not taken on active service, it was still vulnerable to loss or capture.
The Lakin Room: The Lakin Room is arranged as the Officers’ Mess of The Gordon Highlanders and is decorated with some of the Regiment’s most treasured silver, crystal and china.

So, lived in Aberdeen for ever, heard about the Museum but never had gone to visit. What a shame it took so long honestly. Discovered a lovely cafe within, beautiful gardens to wander around and everyone (mostly) was a volunteer and they were so friendly and helpful. Cafe offered usual lunch type things, soup, sandwiches and selection of teas and coffees and it was fresh and very tasty. Spent ages in the gardens afterwards. Didn’t venture into the Museum as ran out of time, but on my next visit I will definitely go in for a bit of history! If you haven’t gone, I would say go- suitable for all ages and stages. There is First World War trench that has been added to the grounds of this already impressive Museum . A young adult named Kirsty was our guide . All of the staff and volunteers have tremendous knowledge of the Gordon’s that really enhanced our visit . Don’t miss it

Had a nice breakfast roll with coffee, then a tour around the museum and gardens. Some say it is not so easy to follow the map, but you soon find your way around! The Grant room is full of military memorabilia, and even 5hough I visited before, I just realised that it is named after the Grant family, famous for the whisky distillery (there is a small but fascinating museum there too, exhibiting the General Grants medals, awards and trophies.....) The staff at the Gordon Highlanders Museum are very friendly and helpful, ensuring you enjoy your visit. I got shown around the ‘new’ WW1 Trenches. At first they don’t look overly effective, but the gentleman guide explained a lot of how the conditions were for the soldiers at the time, and brought the trenches to life! Thank you. Don’t miss out on a short walk around the walled gardens, just to reflect on you visit and enjoy the peace and quiet.Had a great time looking round the museum accompanied by one of the volunteers who had lots of interesting stories to share. I also love the tea room, always excellent service and the best scones.

The Gordon Highlander's regiment part of the Scottish army was raised by the Gordon family of Aberdeenshire, and went to war internationally for the British Empire, including two world wars. The exhibition housed in a large country house close to Aberdeen city centre (on a main bus route) highlights the lineage of its clans source and various battles fought over its historical lifespan . The exhibition features a full size copy of a world war one trench, original uniforms, medals, guns and audio visual footage. There are a number of ex Gordons soldiers who give their time to answer questions etc of visitors, and a nice café. Overall an excellent exhibition with very interesting content . Allow 2 hours inc a visit to the café.
