What to expect
Walk of 10 km and 290m of elevation gain. Starting from the charming village of Monolithos, you go down for a few kilometers to a small bay of "red" sand enclosed by high cliffs. This wild bay, reachable only on foot, will leave you speechless for its "postcard" Greek beauty.
Crystal clear waters and sea breeze are ideal for a short stop before starting the ascent to the castle that stands out in the green valley perched on a rock.
Monolithos Castle, built on a 236m high monolith to which it owes its name, was never conquered thanks to its position. Today only some external parts of the fortifications and two chapels from the 15th century remain, as well as the breathtaking view of Akramitis, the island of Halki and the vast blue Aegean. After sunset, the walk takes us back to the village accompanied by dusk.
Stop At:
• Monolithos Castle, Monolithos Greece
• Monolithos, Monolithos, Rhodes, Dodecanese, South Aegean

Handy area for parking to begin at. You get 1 litre of water each but if its hot out I would bring some extra. Nice snacks along the way. The hike is in an area totally unaffected by fires, it was the same tour regardless. Manuela was a brilliant guide, showed us the local flora as we went and some talk about the island and life there. We had a good chat among the group of eight as we went, not a strenuous pace and took breaks where anyone wanted as well as regular water stops. The beach which we stopped at was lovely, waves were strong but it was fun playing around and had some coffee and biscuits after. I would take the walking sticks on offer if you're unsure as they're quite light if you're not using them and they're great for security on the rough path going down to the sea as you will slip a little on occasion. Runners are fine, I wouldn't recommend anything lighter like flip flops or sandals. The view and the sunset at the castle is beautiful. There will probably be a little crowd there as it's a well known spot but it's a large area and easy to find some space for yourself with a view and some snacks again from the guide. There is a toilet at the café just below the castle but you would have to purchase something there. The homemade lemonade is excellent. My boyfriend and I did the 11km hike around Monolithos yesterday. Around this area there was no wildfire damage and everything was very safe. Our guide was Manuela, she was absolutely brilliant and very knowledgeable! From start to finish we felt very looked after and the whole hike had a wonderful atmosphere. We walked down to a wild beach and got the chance to swim in the sea, then we walked up and explored around the ruins of Monolithos castle. Manuela made us a beautiful plate of feta cheese and olives with some local bread and wine while we watched the sunset. We had a fantastic time and made some very special memories. We will be sure to book with hiking Rhodes again! So much adventure and fun in a few hours! This was the second hike we did with Manuela from Hiking Rhodes. Can't say enough good things about this hike. Manuela picked us up, and we had a lovely drive across the island to a stunning point overlooking a bay and monolithos to our left. Manuela supplied us with plenty of water, snacks, juice, and hiking poles, and off we went. It was a stunning hike through cypress and pine, then in a dry stream bed, a tadge tricky that bit. Unfortunately, on the last stretch the extreme heat overtook my husband, but Manuela had that covered, she gave him restorative electrolytes and made him rest. The rest of the group, including our daughter, were guided onto the beach, and we were able to rest and await Manuela in a safe car accessible point. She picked us up and actually took us to a different beach so I could swim, which was amazing. We were then able to rejoin the others onwards to monolithos Castle. By this point, and because the steps to the castle were not to many, my husband could enjoy the glorious sunset. This was the most beautiful sunset I've seen. Manuela was superb, we enjoyed snacks by the church and it was perfect. Currently the island is experiencing extreme heat, as my husband would normally be fine, but Manuela had this all in hand.
