This was a delicious and informative tour led by friendly and experienced guides. I heard about Hungry Whales and a cruise critic group for my transatlantic cruise. One of our participants suggested it and soon we had enough for not one but two groups. Since it was Sunday, a lot of the city of Ponta Delgado was closed. Hungry Whales put together a special Sunday to work for us and they are now offering it for anyone that comes to the city on Sunday. We were made by Raphael call mom who is knowledge in perfect English made us all feel at home. We broke into two groups. Ours was led by Dyogo. Many in our group were not fast walkers and he kept the pace slow so that everyone could keep up. We started with a taste of a Azorean pastry. Then went into a café to try local cheese and bread. Try it first alone and then put on the local honey. What a difference in flavor! Dyogo Took us on a walk through the city he is quite knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our questions. I learned a lot about the city and about the Azores. I Lunch was at a hotel. We started with a choice of Azorean beer, wine, or flavored soda. The first course was limpet, and interesting shellfish served in a yummy butter and garlic sauce. The next course was parrot fish and tuna with potatoes and assorted vegetables. After that, came out meat which we got to cook on heated volcanic stones. For dessert, we had a local cheesecake that tasted like a Pana cotta. There was passion fruit on top. And, surprise, two delicious cookies at the bottom! The next stop was an old church which houses an art gallery. I highly recommend this tour. It’s a great combination of history and food. Raphael and Dyogo were excellent guidesRafael is amazing! If you want to learn about Ponta Delgado food and culture, Hungry Whales is the right choice. He does a good job of adding some history as well.
