Snorkeling in Gatas Bay

Observation of the underwater world and corals, immerse yourself in another world.
The “Gatas Bay” is located on the north-east bank of Boa Vista.
"Gatas"
refers to the local name of the nurse shark.
But it is completely harmless and very shy.
Snorkeling tours are only possible at high tide, as the bay becomes very shallow at low tide and the coral heads almost protrude from the sea surface.
Equipment such as shoes, life jacket, mask and snorkel are available. We don't use fins to avoid damaging the fragile corals. But they are not needed either, there is no current and the depth is only about 1.5 meters.
The trip to Gatas (four-wheel drive pick-up vehicle) takes about 50 minutes from Sal Rei.
We usually spend 45-60 minutes in the water.
On the way back we stop in a small one

Although I never actually learned the names of the leader or driver, they were both enthusiastic about the trip and made it very enjoyable. The location was a bit far away but worth it because we were literally the only people at Gatas Bay!

Vorab: Nehmt euren Plastik-Müll wieder mit nachhause!!! Es würde nicht zusammen passen, schnorcheln zu buchen und gleichzeitig die Augen vor diesen riesigen Plastikmüllbergen zu verschließen. Sowohl im Meer als auch an Land wenn die Schildkröten kommen, ist es ein absolutes No Go den Müll vor Ort...
Vorab: Nehmt euren Plastik-Müll wieder mit nachhause!!! Es würde nicht zusammen passen, schnorcheln zu buchen und gleichzeitig die Augen vor diesen riesigen Plastikmüllbergen zu verschließen. Sowohl im Meer als auch an Land wenn die Schildkröten kommen, ist es ein absolutes No Go den Müll vor Ort zulassen. Wer schnorcheln geht, sollte sich bewusst sein, dass jede Berührung mit einer Koralle diese verenden lässt, also lasst die Füsse und Finger davon weg! Wer einen Schnorchelausflug auf Boa Vista machen will, ist mit Rotcha Tour gut aufgehoben. Wir hatten die Touren schon von Deutschland aus gebucht um sicher zu gehen, dass noch Plätze frei sind (waren nur 5 Tage dort). Ein fantastischer Trip der mit einem Pickups Auto startet zur Gata’s Bucht. Wir wurden pünktlich vom Hotel abgeholt und konnten im Wagen hinten auf der Rampe sitzen. Was für uns schon ein Mega Erlebnis war. In Deutschland müsste man erstmal 50 Dokumente und Verzichtserklärung unterschreiben für so einen Spass:-). Es gibt ein tolles großes Riff direkt vom Strand aus ohne Boot erreichbar. Ausrüstung wird zur Verfügung gestellt und ins Wasser geht es ohne Flossen. Es gab einige Kugelfische, sogar Krustentiere die sich in Höhlen versteckt hatten, haben wir angetroffen. Unser Guide war damit beschäftigt einem anderen Tourenanbieter, der zwei Gäste abgesetzt hatte anzumahnen, weil die Gäste wild auf den Korallen rumhampelten und mit Flossen im Wasser waren. Wir fanden das sehr gut, dass er hier gesagt hatte, dass so was nicht geht. Deshalb sollte man immer darauf achten bei Anbietern zu buchen die die Natur respektieren und darauf achten, damit wilde Touristen sich benehmen. Die ganze Tour inkl. Fahrt war wunderschön. Wir wollten unbedingt nochmals zum schnorcheln (hatte leider meine Corona geschädigte Lunge noch nicht zugelassen). Auf dem Nachhauseweg gab es noch einen Zwischenstopp zum Einkehr mit einheimischer Bewirtung inkl.Schnaps. Der war so lecker, dass wir 2 Tage später dort nochmals vorbeigefahren sind und uns nochmal einen gegönnt hatten:-). Rund um toller Ausflug:-)K4R1N_Germany

Es gibt ein tolles großes Riff direkt vom Strand aus ohne Boot erreichbar. Ausrüstung wird zur Verfügung gestellt und es wird bei allem...
Wer einen Schnorchelausflug auf Boa Vista machen will, ist mit Rotcha Tour gut beraten! Ein fantastischer Trip zur Gata’s Bucht, wo auch Muschelfischer arbeiten. Es gibt ein tolles großes Riff direkt vom Strand aus ohne Boot erreichbar. Ausrüstung wird zur Verfügung gestellt und es wird bei allem geholfen :-) wer Glück hat sieht sogar Ammenhaie, oder wenn man sich traut etwas weiter raus zu schwimmen. Es gab einige Kofferfische, sogar eine Familie (riesiges Tier und kleines), einen Trompetenfisch, zahlreiche andere die ich nicht kenne. Leider hatte ich für Fotos nur mein Handy in ner wasserdichten Hülle - bitte rechtzeitig an gute Ausrüstung 📸💦 denken bevor mans bereut. Die ganze Tour verläuft ohne Stress und später gibt’s noch ne kleine Einkehr mit einheimischer Bewirtung. Wir hatten eine tolle Gruppe und haben uns noch lange unterhalten (auch da kein Stress zum Weiterfahren).Diana_C

A great trip right across the island, stopping in small villages. So interesting to see how people live. Snorkelling was lovely and we saw some amazing creatures.

We loved our trip from start to finish. The experience of getting on the back of a 4X4 with another couple and a another lady was amazing! We made instant friends and had a great laugh! The drive to the bay is an experience in itself as the roads are very basic and bumpy (we loved every second). ...
We loved our trip from start to finish. The experience of getting on the back of a 4X4 with another couple and a another lady was amazing! We made instant friends and had a great laugh! The drive to the bay is an experience in itself as the roads are very basic and bumpy (we loved every second). The snorkelling was lovely, it was a small secluded bay in which you did not have to go very far or deep to see the beautiful fish! It was especially breathtaking to see the puffer fish and all the different types of coral. Our guide Simon was brilliant, he was very friendly and funny! He would be snorkelling in front of us and call us over to look at what he had found alongside checking everyone was alright as we swam. On the way back you stop off in a rural village in which you can sample goats cheese and “ponch” which is a rum type drink (very strong.. very nice!!) My partner and I would recommend this trip and so would the people we shared the trip with! A lovely day on a beautiful island. Vi hade en fantastisk dag. Vår guide var toppen och snorklingen otrolig. Vi såg mängder av koraller och flera olika sorters fiskar. Passade både oss vuxna och vår 11-åring.
