As part of our journey we arrived at Tuxtla Gutierrez Airport after leaving Mexico City. We travelled by road to the Sumidero Canyon - on our way to San Cristobal de la Casas. The Sumidero boat ride was recommended as a worthwhile scenic adventure especially after descending from busy, smoggy Mexico City (some 2 kms high in altitude) to the rural-like river Rio Grijalva/El Sumidero (1 km altitude) which passes through the canyon. It was February and it was hot! We boarded one of the many "speed" boats and headed North to the Canon proper - the boats carried about 8-12 persons - everyone had to wear life jackets. The good things were: 1). a "chance" to see crocodiles, monkeys and bird-life in their natural habitat; 2). seeing and travelling through the incredible Canyon walls. The not so good was 1). having a bumpy fast pace boat ride (hold onto your hat) - no good if you are prone to sea sickness (motion sickness). 2). the invariable encounter with souvenir sellers, in boats, that intercepted us at reaching the dam wall (before we turned back to head back to the boat shed). So in all it was well worth it - we saw crocodiles and monkeys and the magnificent scenery.A fantastic day trip. The canyon is unbelievably beautiful and you learn a lot along the way. We also saw crocodiles sunbathing and monkeys in the trees! The guides were friendly and helpful.

We first did two viewpoints of the canyon from above and afterwards we went on the boat through the canyon. Wonderful! Our captain was very knowledgeable about the canyon and the species living there. He let us see monkeys, a crocodile and a iguana. The boat ride ended in Chiapa de Corso where we had about 1h30 of free time which was frankly too long. It wasn't really appealing to have lunch there so we decided to have lunch back in Sant Cristóbal. This was a highlight of our Mexico travels so far. This was a highlight of our Mexico travels so far. Every part was so convenient in terms of picking us up from the airport and then taking us on to San Cristobal afterwards. The tour itself was amazing. Our guide was so knowledgeable and friendly. The canyon was stunning and the boat guide knew exactly where to find the crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas etc. Highly recommend this tour!
