Sunrise Bike Tour on the Murgia Park with Breakfast
Overview
Have you ever woken up at dawn? If so, you have surely noticed that everything is more magical at that time. The warm light lengthens the shadows and enhances the shapes.
Cycling early in the morning, especially on very hot days, has the advantage of not suffering much from the temperature while enjoying the clean air.
Cycling up to the Murgia park (about 8km), even if it has a challenging climb in the last two km, is a very beautiful experience because it allows you to admire Matera from a unique point of view and, doing it in the morning, allows you to enjoy the better light to observe the details and understand how the city has evolved from simple caves to a tangle of alleys and steps with the houses below that form the basis of those above.

This was one of our favorite tours of Matera! Paolo is kind, patient, and definitely enthusiastic about Matera, the Sassi, and bicycling. My husband and I really enjoyed spending time with him. Not going to lie, some of the hills were hard. But all those years of spin classes paid off and I made it to the top without getting off and walking my bike. The majority of the tour is on asphalt, some of it through the city, a bit of it on gravel along the old Appian way. My husband and I are both in good shape so we rented the normal bikes from him (not the E bike) and were impressed with their good condition. Paolo also provides helmets. He picked up warm croissants and we headed out of town at 6:30 am. We didn’t see the sunrise (not a good idea to cycle in the dark, right?- I did see it when I woke up at 5:30). We had great light to view the Sassi from across the ravine. Coffee hit the spot and he also brought some home made Apricot jam. It really felt like a special experience and I would definitely recommend this unique tour of Murgia Park, and a bit of Matera. He also gave us a wonderful restaurant recommendation- La GattaBuia- a winner!
