Beirut, a city of diversities and contradictions!
Destroyed and rebuilt 7 times in history, basically natural disasters were the cause, then we had a civil war from 1975 till 1990!
We drive in the morning to the museum located in the heart of the east side of Beirut. The National Museum was built in the forties, destroyed in the seventies, revived in the nineties. But what did we do to protect our valuable discoveries? Let’s get some answers and visit this wonderful museum for much more…
Down Town Beirut; this area was badly shattered during the civil war in the seventies. Wonderfully restored in the nineties… The parliament house, the government palace, the Roman “hammams” , the Martyr’s square, Beirut largest Mosque, and the renovated souks are all in a walking distance… we will end our nice moderate walk in the streets of DT by checking what is going on at the fancy water front, Zeitunay bay more precisely… Restaurant, cafes, bars are all standing there for you… We proceed then by car to the Raouche area to discover the symbol of the city; “The Pigeon Rocks” and then drive back to your hotel.

I only had two days in Beirut / Lebanon so wanted to maximize my time here! Dave of Dave Lebanon D.M.C. picked me up at Beirut Rafic Hariri airport as I arrived from the States and we immediately began this half-day tour!! Dave is a life-long resident of Beirut so can add value and insight that others might not be able to. We moved at my pace, and Dave gave me insight into the current state of Lebanese affairs, the struggling economy, historical background, and so much more!! Dave knows Beirut and Lebanon very well and speaks all the languages and has many contacts throughout the various religious, political, and cultural groups. During the tour Dave eventually got me to my Hotel to check-in, and then we continued on our tour of Beirut. Highly recommend Dave and any tour he provides ( I also did his Baalbeck, Anjar, and Ksara tour the next day, 8/19/2023 -- see separate review.) Thanks Dave for two days of great experiences!!I only do reviews if the experience is exceptional and Dave's guided tours deserve this five star review - I'd give him seven if it was permitted... I only do reviews if the experience is exceptional and Dave's guided tours deserve this five star review - I'd give him seven if it was permitted... We (three Irish people) contacted Dave and over a couple of weeks we agreed a private itinerary for three days. This covered Dave's services as our guide and driver, creating a tailor-made trip which will remain with us forever. We travelled in a comfortable air conditioned van where each of us had a window seat and were informed by Dave throughout. Specifically we asked for a walking tour of Beirut with an emphasis on 20th century history. This covered the Civil War right through to the recent tragic explosion in Beirut port, which is still smouldering. It also included driving 2000m above sea level into the Shouf Mountains for a gentle trek in the Cedars of Lebanon forests, the Roman city of Baalbeck, winelands of the Bekaa Valley and the stunning Jeita caves. We were safe and above all enriched. As this was a private made to measure tour, it cost a little more than a shared itinerary, but given the strength of the Euro and the dollar, it was all excellent value. I am happy to recommend Dave's services and I know you will be more than satisfied.Beirut has a very complex history and my guide covered all its phases from beginning to recent events. Beirut has a very complex history and my guide covered all its phases from beginning to recent events. He´s knowledgeble and explains clearly without being boring. He has lived himself the tumultuous phases of these last few years city and his words are vibrant with experience. The city has a long preserved charm that you can feel in its streets and corners and in the gloomy atmosphere that now has taken place in the once bustling areas before recent dramatic events. And with this tour you really get the feeling of these many layers of events that shaped it til today.Seeing the National Gallery. This must be one of the best of this type of gallery I’ve ever seen.. The drive around Beirut was fascinating and well worth it. There is also an audio presentation at the beginning which is most helpful and explains the complexities of present day Beirut.

Dave was a wonderful guide on this excellent walking tour giving an overview of downtown Beirut's key sights. His amazing knowledge of the history, culture and socio-politics of Lebanon and the whole region made this a fascinating and worthwhile day. This tour was a great way to get a snapshot of the story of Beirut. Dave was the perfect guide because of his extensive expertise, but his easy-going personality made it feel like you were chatting to a friend. P.S. an extra little tip - don't forget to ask Dave about music.....
