Our vacation plans were taking us to Gibrlatar, so we decided on a whim to add Tangier to the itinerary. Our vacation plans were taking us to Gibrlatar, so we decided on a whim to add Tangier to the itinerary. What was a late addition became the highlight of our trip, in large part because of Youssef. We had arranged in advance for him to show us Tangier and Chefchaouen, and to provide transportation from the port and to the airport. From the moment we arrived, it was clear that Youssef was going to be more than just a guide. He welcomed us warmly at the port, and we were in a taxi heading for our riad in no time. Along the way, Youssef pointed out some of the major sights. Upon arrival at our riad in the medina, Youssef helped us with our luggage and promised to return in an hour to collect us for dinner. He arrived promptly and we set off on foot to his home in the modern part of Tangier. We were greeted at the door by Youssef’s wife. From that moment until the end of the evening, we were treated like family. We talked about life in Morocco and the US, how all of our children are doing navigating late childhood and young adulthood, and - of course - football. Through it all, there was a steady stream of some of the finest food we have ever eaten. Knowing we are vegetarians, Youssef’s wife prepared a delicious cous cous dish without the usual chicken. It was difficult to stop eating it because it was so good. Since there were so many sweets to sample, we were finally able to summon the strength to limit our main course to only two full plates of cous cous. About the sweets… Wow! Each one was more mouth-watering than the last. (Fortunately, we were given a sampling to enjoy during the remainder of our time in Tangier.). At the end of it all, a refreshing mint tea was served and we learned why it is so popular. After dinner, gifts were exchanged. What started as a simple dinner with strangers transformed throughout the evening into a holiday feast with family. For our first full day in Tangier, Youssef showed us around the medina and some of the areas nearby. We discovered quickly that having a guide is the best way to navigate the oldest parts of the city. Not only does Youssef know where he’s going and know what is truly interesting, but having him with us also meant we were almost never offered “guidance" to the “Berber Market.” Youssef made us feel safe and comfortable throughout all of our explorations. For our second full day, we ventured to Chefchaouen in a taxi driven by Youssef’s brother. It turns out there is more to Morocco than just Tangier, and the countryside is beautiful! What can be said about The Blue City that hasn’t already been said? It is every bit as amazing as the stories and the pictures would have you believe, but it MUST be experienced firsthand to be truly appreciated. Once again, having Youssef with us made everything easier and more interesting. He has been there many times, so he could show us the best Chefchaouen has to offer AND he knows many people there too. When it was time to depart, Youssef made sure we arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare. He didn’t just drop us off at the door. Instead, he helped us with our luggage and made sure we were safely through security (who were refreshingly kind and patient, which was a bit of a shock for two Americans who are accustomed to having to partially disrobe while TSA agents are screaming at everyone). From there, we said our final farewells. Before arriving, Youssef was the guide we hired to make sure our Moroccan adventure was fun and safe. When leaving, Youssef is the friend who welcomed us into his home, introduced us to his family, and showed us his country. We cannot express in strong enough terms how Youssef turned a three-night vacation “extra” into a transformative trip of a lifetime. We are very pleased with Youssef, very kind, with very good English and knowledge of Moroccan history. I recommend it to anyone who wants to have a good time in Tangier.
