Stop At: St Paul's Catacombs, St Agatha Street, Rabat, Island of Malta 2013 Malta
Serving as a burial ground from Punic, Roman and Byzantine times the St Paul’s Catacombs represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity in Malta. It’s association to the saint derives from the myth that this cluster of catacombs was once connected with St Paul’s Grotto. Although this remains a myth, recent research shows that the two, originally formed part of a considerably large cemetery just outside of the ancient city of Melite. Indeed, it is now known that the hypogea were located in a cemetery with a very long history of use starting in, at least, the 3rd or 4th c. BC.
The catacombs form a typical complex of interconnected underground Roman cemeteries that were in use up to the 7th, and possibly the 8th centuries AD. They are located at Ħal Bajjada area, which is also known as Tad-Dlam.

Our private tour provided low stress, hotel pick-up and drop off, and enabled us to see all the temples, including the Rabat catacombs, in comfort, in just 5 hours. The temperature was 30'C, so it was nice to cool down in the vehicle after walking through the outdoor sites. As we were fortunate to avoid line-ups, our driver also took us up to the Dingli Cliffs viewpoint and gave us the opportunity to take a short boat ride to the beautiful Blue Grotto. The tour is very expensive but was a great way to focus on the activities we were most interested in. Note this tour does not include the Hypogeum. We didn't have time to use the wi-fi, and purchased our own water. Do your research in advance as the driver does not provide factual information about the sites, nor does he accompany you on the tour. He was however, punctual, a good driver, friendly and answered all our questions. It was a very nice tour especially if you like history of the country. It was a very nice tour especially if you like history of the country. The drive to those temple locations was very comfortable and scenery was also beautiful. When I booked the tour I also should have visited Domus Romano, National museum and St Paul Catacomb but they were not on the schedule that day. Fortunately, I met a very kind driver who add MDina and St. Paul Catacomb for schedule of the day. He seemed to love his country and like to engage with conversation about the tour and the country itself. The driver, Kenneth, treated me with respect and courtesy and good attitude when I asked about other point of interests. I enjoyed the tour very much, though I missed a few places but Kenneth took me to a couple more places. For that I am very grateful for Kenneth’s kindness. The Temples tour was very enjoyable. We were picked on time by our guide Jason in a beautiful air conditioned car ,we were supplied with water . Good, on time and friendly tour driver. Young manager/ owner needs to pass on the agreed customer list of wishes/ places to visit and see to the tour driver, in advance. After taking the trouble and time to make up a list for this private tour and agreed with the young manager/ owner in advance, nothing was pass on to the tour drive, which was disappointing. Driver just showed us, what seemed to be a standard list….and we had to take time to go through what was on the list on the day…..etc. Further customers: 1) BRING a copy of what was agreed. Fortunately, we did and I showed the tour driver - so all good, for planning/ timing purposes on/ for the day 2) Read a bit more on the places you wish to go, as the private tour person is more a driver than a tour guide. He was very nice, very polite and on time though, which was greatWe booked this as something we hadn’t seen or looked into before. I must say it was well worth it. We booked this as something we hadn’t seen or looked into before. I must say it was well worth it. We expected this to be a tour on a bus( like most others) however we had a private escort, who was a very lovely man. Due to the time of year (off peak) not a lot of museums were opened. Which wasn’t the tour guides fault (they closed early) but the tour guide and the manager done everything in their power to ensure we had a great experience. We then were carted to other areas in which we wouldn’t have seen otherwise. Very friendly and accommodating. Great guide. Great service, and would definitely recommend. Ps. This is not like your usual guides who would take you around every little detail and explain it all (can get quite boring depending on the type of person you are). You are explained to where you are, there are books in the car you can read, and your left to your own devices - so if your a couple, ideal for still keeping the nice romantic walks/experiences together, without worrying about a tour guide.
