Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

The 6 day Mount Kilimanjaro hiking Machame variation is a difficult route. In particular, day four combined with day five makes for a very hard schedule. Day four is a full day of hiking from Barranco to Barafu. Then after dinner and a partial night's sleep, the very long and strenuous summit day begins around midnight. The 6 day Kilimanjaro hiking / climbing Machame route requires 19-24 hours of demanding walking, at extremely high elevation, with only 4-6 hours of sleep.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

6 Days Kilimanjaro hiking machame route begin with the drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

2 days Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Elevation (ft): 9, 400ft to 12, 500ft, Distance: 5 km, Hiking Time: 4-6 hours, Habitat: Moorland
Our Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Machame route continued on this day. After breakfast, we depart the rain forest glades and continue the Kilimanjaro climbing Machame route on an upward path, crossing the little valley and trekking up a steep, rocky ridge covered in heather till the ridge comes to an end. The path now takes a river gorge to the west. It's time to unwind, eat, and spend the night in the Shira campsite.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

3 days Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation (ft): 12, 500ft to 13000 ft, Distance: 10 km, Hiking Time: 6-8 hours , Habitat: Semi Desert
From the Shira Plateau, we move eastward along a ridge, crossing the intersection that leads to Kibo's peak. Our course shifts to the south-east toward the "Shark's Tooth" Lava Tower as we continue on our Kilimanjaro Climbing Machame route. The second connection, which gets us up to the Arrow Glacier at a height of 16, 000 feet, is located not far from the tower. At a height of 13, 000 feet, we now continue our descent to the Barranco Camp. Here, we unwind, eat dinner, and spend the night. The day is crucial for acclimatization and will assist your body get ready for summit day even though you end it at the same elevation as when you began.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 40000 Tanzania
4 day Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation (ft): 13, 000ft to 15, 000ft, Distance: 9km, Hiking Time: 8-10 hours, Habitat: Alpine Desert
After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue our Kilimanjaro Hiking / Climbing on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. Then, we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Camp. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut
Stop At: Mount Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro National Park 40000 Tanzania
Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent , Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent , Habitat: Arctic
We continue up to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers at very early morning (midnight to two in the morning). You move towards Stella Point on the crater rim in a northwesterly direction as you climb through thick scree. The most difficult part of the trek is now, both mentally and physically. Your brief rest stop at Stella Point (18, 600 feet) will be rewarded with the most breathtaking sunrise (weather permitting). On your hour-long ascent to the summit from Stella Point, snow is a possibility. The summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, known as Uhuru Peak, is where you are now. As we continue straight down to the Mweka camp site from there, we stop at Barafu for lunch. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the afternoon. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Moshi

After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi. The end of Kilimanjaro hiking for 6 days machame route.
