The Mezcal Journey
Overview
We will begin our trip starting from the center of the city of Oaxaca and we will visit the towns of Mitla and Matatlán. There we will take a walking tour through our majestic agave fields with thousands of specimens, where we will be able to learn more about this plant, as well as having enough time to do a couple of activities and of course the best photographs.
Then we will continue to an artisan mezcal distillery to learn step by step, the entire artisan process of making our drink. At the end of the tour, we will have an unlimited tasting of different varieties of mezcal.
Finally, we will share a traditional Oaxacan meal at a local restaurant, already included, and of course, More Mezcal!

We had the best time on the Mezcal Journey with Ricardo! Having roots in Mexico I was weary about finding an authentic Mezcal experience and this tour provided just that! Ricardo has carefully curated a great holistic tour which gives insight into Mezcal from plant to bottle but also the culture of Oaxaca. All the details were greatly appreciated! The spacious/comfortable van, the tour of the mezcal facility/process, the tasting, the food, and the new friendships! We researched many tours and had a decent understanding but felt this was THE best tour to get a taste for an authentic mezcal experience and it delivered! Don’t think twice, just book!I don't speak Spanish unfortunately, so this review will be in English. I don't speak Spanish unfortunately, so this review will be in English. Which is great because our two hosts for The Mezcal Journey speak English and are funny and entertaining. Myself and my Mexican girlfriend went on this Mezcal tour and it was amazing! You are taken to an agave field and explained the growing process (some agave take 20+ years to be ready for mezcal). You have a mezcal distillery tour all with taste testing. Then an amazing lunch in a small town outside Oaxaca. If you want a fun mezcal tour, go with The Mezcal Journey. Ricardo y Alvaro, gracias for todo. The bearded Aussie will be back!!!! 💚🤍❤️ viva México! 🇲🇽This experience was simply great!! This experience was simply great!! From the clear and kind communication prior to the day, to the impeccable pick-up and trip, the visit to the mezcaleria and the fields, the tasting, the food, the explanations and answers to each question.. everything was so well planned, explained, and most of all Ricardo made us feel so comfortable and pampered the whole time :)) We will honestly remember this amazing experience for our whole life!! From the bottom of my heart: highly reccomended.Ricardo was very responsive and reached out when we were on our way to the meeting point to make sure we were okay and on our way. Ricardo was very responsive and reached out when we were on our way to the meeting point to make sure we were okay and on our way. The meeting point was very east to find. I liked that it wasn’t in Centro. It was a nice neighborhood that I think I would have overlooked if I hadn’t gone there for the tour. Our guide was Alvaro. He was amazing. I don’t know if I would have had such an amazing experience without him. He was extremely sweet and kind, super knowledgeable, and fun! He took amazing photos and videos of the group. He made the tour very interactive among us. We chatted a lot, not only about mezcal, but about regional things, Mexican culture, foods and drinks we need to try, and tequila. A local friend! I appreciated learning about his experiences in the mezcal industry and his goals. Overall, I speak enough Spanish, but if you don’t, I had no issues communicating with Ricardo and Alvaro in English, even on the complicated topics. Our driver was incredibly sweet and patient. He helped us out of the van at our stops. The roads are a little bumpy but there was no issue - and I can be dizzy on the roads. The drive out was beautiful. The van had AC and curtains. We drove to a mezcal farm where we learned about the fields and harvest. We took photos and videos pruning agave with a machete. The best part was a dose of mezcal from an agave leaf. We then went to a distillery where we saw the full process of making mezcal, we chopped the agave with an axe, and climbed into the cellar. On site, we had a mezcal tasting and lunch. Lunch was delicious and filling. There are mezcal cocktails available. Highly recommend. They accommodated the vegetarians of the group too. As for the mezcal tasting…. “Say when” applied. It was an amazing experience. You can buy mezcal on site as well if you liked the tasting. Alvaro asked us if we wanted to stop at a local shop. I don’t think it was “part of the tour”. There, Alvaro walked right behind their counter and gave us more mezcal tastings! I bought a lot of pottery and linens. I found the prices to be more affordable than CDMX and Oaxaca. Those are my favorite souvenirs. The store owner was very sweet and helpful with sorting through the linens. Overall, I appreciated that the tour was available on Sundays. I worked remotely and didn’t have flexibility. Other tours don’t operate on Sundays. Please note - the donkeys rest on Sundays. This event made my trip. I’d do the same one over again. Highly recommend!! Please remember to tip your guide!! Notes for things to bring: It’s very hot! Bring sunscreen, water, and a snack in case you get dizzy (heat makes me sick). At the distillery, I had a horrible reaction to the mezcal smoke. Alvaro gave my eye drops, but I ended up ditching my contact lenses. Just in case bring allergy drops, back up lenses (for the overall trip), and your glasses (for the day). Not sure what happened to me as I’ve been near bigger camp fires, but it was a bit uncomfortable for a while.Es un tour que te da una muestra de lo increíblemente rico que es México. Entretenido y dinámico.
