We had a fantastic night tour seeing the most incredible wildlife. It seemed like we saw something great every few metres - particular favourites were the trap door spiders, the golden orb spider, lots of amazing scorpions, a sock-headed snake, the beautiful tree frog and a very cool bioluminescent click beetle. Our two guides really brought to life just how much is out there that you never normally see and all not very far from our hotel! Our 12 year old son said it was one of the best experiences of his life!I will admit to being a bit sceptical when I saw so many rave reviews. Rest assured that they are well deserved! We were rained out the first night we were scheduled for this tour and only got partway through it. When we reconnected with Tracie and Gian on the second night we were better prepared for rain but thankfully it never came. Our two hour night tour was fascinating !! Tracie and Gian were incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about all the night creatures we encountered. They shared fascinating information and stories about each creature we saw. There were creatures to see at almost every step making the evening a rich and diverse experience. As a wonderful followup to the tour each person receives an email with a link to a list of the creatures seen and some pictures and additional links to further investigate including book suggestions. This in itself is a treasure trove of information which we very much appreciated. We came away with a deeper respect for the complexity of night creatures and their adaptation to the environment. We also came away with a deep respect for those who devote their lives to studying these creatures. While we were amazed at what we saw, our night tour was extra special because Tracie, after over 20 years in Drake Bay, saw two creatures she had never seen before. Now that's a special night !I agree with all the glowing reports from other travelers. This was one of the high points of our two week visit to Drake Bay. I agree with all the glowing reports from other travelers. This was one of the high points of our two week visit to Drake Bay. The guides are extremely knowledgeable, but you don’t need to take notes or pictures since you receive an email after the tour with a summary of everything from your tour. Even if you don’t like spiders, you will be fascinated by the spider information you learn. You may see a sloth way up high in a tree as we did. You may see snakes, but we did not. We did see a variety of frogs and toads. It is amazing how alive the forest is at night if you look closely. Be sure to pack headlamps if you can because that makes the tour easier. And remember to turn them off when the tour guide is talking! This night tour was one of the highlights of our visit to Costa Rica. Tracie and Gianfranco have lived and researched in this region for over two decades, so they are essentially showing us their backyard - but what an amazing backyard it is! This night tour was one of the highlights of our visit to Costa Rica. Tracie and Gianfranco have lived and researched in this region for over two decades, so they are essentially showing us their backyard - but what an amazing backyard it is! They showed us a wide diversity of creatures (spiders, frogs, lizards, snakes, scorpions, velvet worms!) that we would have totally missed (and indeed never saw again). For each creature, they gave us quite a lot of interesting and fun information, so that it all felt like being on the set of a live BBC documentary. Cherry on top of the cake: afterwards they sent us a report of the night, with the names and photos of many of the species seen, and links to more information and videos. The tour is very intelligently organised to make sure it is accessible and fun. We follow a very safe path (a good part of it could actually be done on a wheelchair) and there are no dull moments, given that while one of the guides explains the cool creature currently under our attention, the other dives into the bush to find us the next treasure. Highly recommended to curious kids of all ages!
