An excellently researched tour, which helped us better understand the history of both the city and the university of Cambridge and their complex relationship! The guides were extremely knowledgeable and managed to create amazing oppportunities for conversations with the group, I have never felt some comfortable talking about uncomfortable legacies and narratives! It is also a rich overview which covers many topics: imperialism, gender inequalities, racial prejudicies, homophobie, wealth inequalities, and legacies of colonialism and of the slave trade! If there is one tour to take to get to know Cambrdige, it is this one! Finally a different type of tour on such a touristic city with a troubled past. I was glad to hear the other side of history and discuss questions that sometimes people don't like to ask, though (honestly) so obvious if you think about them. I've lived in Cambridge for a few years & have taken visitors on plenty of tours and yawned through the usual tall tales and urban myths. This tour was totally different. It went off the beaten track but still got some key sights in. It was thought-provoking and I learned plenty of facts I didn't know despite living here so long. Our guide Leah was knowledgeable, and made the conversations about some difficult topics feel quite engaging and open - and those chats made the walking time fly by. Next time I have visitors, I'll eschew the usual punt tour of the backs and take them on this walking tour instead. This tour will give you new and interesting perspectives on a city that has plenty of uncomfortable history! This tour will give you new and interesting perspectives on a city that has plenty of uncomfortable history! The guides really know their stuff, but the most engaging aspect of the tour is the way they encourage participants to contribute to the discussion. In the group I was part of, one man was a Cambridge market trader with lots to say about the impact the university has on the town, and a woman from Kazakhstan gave us a fascinating insight into Oliver Cromwell's status as an anti-monarchy hero in the USSR. For anyone interested in the historical and contemporary imperialism of Cambridge University, and in ongoing controversies about its colonial legacies, this is definitely the tour for you!Brilliant tour by some very enthusiastic guides. Really enjoyed having some deep discussions with the other people on the tour.

Our guide, Rose, was well prepared and very informative. In addition to providing information, questions were asked of the tour group that required them to reflect on the moral and ethical issues raised by the tour. In particular these were in relation to historical sexism and racism at Cambridge, and the university’s links with slavery.
