Our guide, Muzaffar Khan, was knowledgable, professional, and fun! In 4 hours we had no less than 10 unique and exciting tastings/experiences. We were met in our hotel lobby on time and escorted into an a/c’d taxi for a ride to the Indian Coffee House which also offered a chance to see the College Street book market! At the coffee house we had fish sticks and egg battered fried mutton with a delicious curried ketchup sauce. True Bengali comfort food! We also enjoyed a “special coffee” the was rich, thick, creamy, and sweet. Special indeed! We then walked to Putiram Sweet Shop, a traditional spot for Bengali sweets for over 150 years, for a sample tray of desserts, all of which were delicious, but not to be missed is the pista barfi! A pistachio flavored milk based dessert that reminds of cheesecake. 😋 We then walked to several more spots including a restaurant serving Kathi rolls (brilliant burrito-like wraps with tandoori chicken inside), a street vendor serving fresh pressed fruit juices, a stop to sit and share masala chai with colleagues of Muzaffar’s, a stop at a saree shop in New Market (a special treat when I shared that I was interested in sarees), then a visit to a food festival (part of the celebration in preparation for Durga Puja), where we had panipuri, chicken kabobs, misti doi (a tangy, yogurt-like milk pudding), and finally a tasty little finger sized treat wrapped in beetle leaves! A truly tasty night to remember and a great intro to Kolkata!Muzaffar shared my enthusiasm for Bengali cuisine and went out of his way to accommodate my rather unplanned booking! Muzaffar shared my enthusiasm for Bengali cuisine and went out of his way to accommodate my rather unplanned booking! He was generous with his time, is an excellent guide and genuinely cared for how I was faring! Given the jetlag and intense heat I started flagging so without me having to ask he was intuitive and suggested cold juices & sweet desserts which made the walk comfortable and fun! I really enjoyed Muzaffar's company and how much I learned about the culture, the history and everything in between. I was astounded at the variety and deliciousness of all the choices of foods I was able to eat! Muzaffar knows all the best spots to have the most authentic experience! He is generously helping me sort out my future travels in India so I can guarantee that his services are well organised, efficient and well worth it!I love food but don’t like to stick to restaurants catering tourists and for that reason I had a great time visiting places the locals go while tasting a sample of snacks, sweets, warm and cold drinks. I love food but don’t like to stick to restaurants catering tourists and for that reason I had a great time visiting places the locals go while tasting a sample of snacks, sweets, warm and cold drinks. Muzaffar is very knowledgeable and a proud Kolkata, he provides an interesting commentary of the various points in the city. We hit a few food stalls that Muzaffar made sure were safe for unaccustomed tummy :-)As first time visitors to Calcutta we were a little overwhelmed and uncertain where to even begin exploring the city. As first time visitors to Calcutta we were a little overwhelmed and uncertain where to even begin exploring the city. We initially booked a food tour with Muzaffar and with his infectious passion, incredible knowledge, sense of humour and grace, he quickly put things in context for us and unveiled a Calcutta we would never have discovered on our own. His tour is comprehensive and takes in many of Calcutta’s tourist sites & culinary highlights. But be warned, Muzaffar is also very generous when it comes to food so make sure you bring a big appetite !!! The food tour with Muzaffar was simply one of the most enjoyable tours we’ve ever experienced and comes sincerely and enthusiastically recommended. PS - his Calcutta sightseeing tour is equally awesome and is also enthusiastically recommended. Mitch & Teresa (Australia)
