Your Experience

Neo-classical Portuguese Residence of the Royals

Known to be the residence of the Portuguese royal family from the reign of King D. Luís I to the end of the monarchy in 1910, this palace was brought back to life by Queen D. Maria Pia de Sabóia in 1862. The original arrangement and decor of the rooms have been preserved to date. These were attributed to the creations of architect Joaquim Possidónio da Silva. The Palace reopened its doors as a museum in 1968 and is the only royal palace in the city that can be visited. Take this opportunity to stroll through this magnificent site, particularly the monarch's quarters and the throne room from the 18th to 19th century. Strategically placed on top of the Ajuda hill, marvel at the panoramic views of the River Tagus. Make note of the important collections from the 18th and 19th centuries collections like decorative arts in gold and silverware, jewelry, textiles, ceramic, glassware, engravings, and more!
