At the end of the 17th century, Emperor Leopold I. commissioned the baroque architect Berhard Fischer von Erlach to build a palatial hunting lodge. Later, during Maria Theresia`s reign, Schönbrunner Palace became the imperial summer residence and glamorous centre of the court life. Today the baroque Palace and its gardens are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Austria`s most-visited Tourist attraction.

Specially created Museum for children and families, this part of the palace provides an insight into the everyday life of the children of the royal family and takes young visitors back to the times of Maria Theresia.

Architect Fisher von Erlach`s designs included a Belvedere for Schönbrunn Hill as the crwoning touch to the palatial baroque ensemble, but it was not until Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg remodelled the park that this project was finally realised in 1775. The viewing terracce of the Gloriette affords a unique view of the entire Schönbrunn Park und large parts of Vienna.

The Privy Garden is part of the Meidling Kammergärten adjacent to the eastern facade of the palace. It received ist german name Kronprinzengarten (Crown Prince Garden) around 1870, after apartements were furnished for Crown Prince Rudolf on the gorund Floor of this wing. It was used as the imperial family`s private garden till the end of the monarchy in 1918.

The maze in the park at Schönbrunn Palace actually consists of three parts: the maze, the labyrinth and the Labyrinthikon playground. The maze was initially laid out around 1720 and then gradually abandoned until the last hedges were felled in 1892. In 1999 it was reconstructed based on historical models over an area of 1715 qm.

189 m long and 10 m wide, the Schönbrunn Orangery is one of the 2 largest baroque orangeries in the world, the other being at Versailles. Due to wheather conditions, the presenation from October till mid-May focuses only winter-hardy, fruit bearing trees and schrubs.

During the last week weeks before his death in November 1828, Franz Schubert lived in his brother Ferdinand`s appartement near Nashmarkt. Here you can see his last drafted compositions, the last letter he wrote and the written documents speaking of his family`s caring efforts at the end of his life.

When I booked this ticket we were not advised that the buses would only be running until 2.45 pm due to the Vienna Marathon taking place. We only had 2 to 3 hours worth of sightseeing. Whilst it was enjoyable it was certainly not value for money. If we had known the buses were not running proper...

This was a absolute scam. The buses are not running so you have to use public transportation, in addition you don’t get a city tour. Public transportation is safe, easy and convenient and it drops you off within walking distance of all the major sites.

Absolute scam. Bought the ticket for the buses and guide around vienna. Except the buses were not running and you are expected to travel yourself on public transport... No bus no guide just tickets you have no idea how to use because you wanted and needed a guide

Made good use of the Hop on Hop off buses to explore the city and identify places we wanted to visit during our stay.
