Swimming with the whale sharks is a once in a lifetime experience!
Our main goal is to find and swim with whale sharks, and our crew will do their best to achieve that, but remember the tour it’s in their natural habitat not in a park, They’re not trained or caged and you go to visit their home. You also don’t feed them so there’s no way to guarantee that we will find the whale sharks out there, even though we have a high success rate.
Inclusions
- Use of Snorkelling equipment
- Snacks
- Lunch
- Bottled water
- Soda/Pop
- All Fees and Taxes
- Dock Fees
What to expect
Experience swimming alongside the largest fish on the planet on a whale shark snorkeling adventure, explore the caribbean sea in the search for whale sharks in their own habitat while spotting dolphins, manta rays and flying fish jumping and thriving along the way.
From June to September hundreds of whale sharks congregate north side of Isla Mujeres forming the largest whale shark congregation in the world!. On this trip, you will have the chance to experience swimming alongside of whale sharks... the thrill that comes from snorkeling so close of the largest fish in the sea is just something you will never forget!
After a 50 minutes boat ride aprox we will get to the area, once you reach the whale shark area you will snorkeling and swimming with the whale sharks; 2 people per turn accompanied by a certified guide at all times, Our idea is that you enter the water 2 times, however, it all depends on the sea conditions, how many sharks there are and your own swimming skills. They’re not trained or caged and you go to visit their home. You also don’t feed them so there’s no way to guarantee that we will find the whale sharks out there, even though we have a high success rate.

The boat the tour company I went with had a nice boat, very nice guides, and much nicer than the other 100 tour boats that harass the whale sharks all at the same time in the same place. The tour company I'm reviewing is the one I reserved the tour with, who, without telling me in advance, gave me to another tour company who took me instead on their behalf. The company I was given to was great, though I would have appreciated some communication with me on this, as I have family who needs to know where I am and which company I went with for safety reasons. This is an extremely long boat trip on the open ocean that in my case left from Playa del Carmen and then went to Cancun and then doubled back to the whale site which seemed like hours of boat travel. It is really really important to take dremadine prior to this trip, which is something I wish had been mentioned in the descripion as an item to take with you. I did see whale sharks, but it's not like you get to just float around and look at them for awhile, which is what I was imagining. Whale sharks are swimming fast so you have to jump into the water and you maybe get 15 to 30 seconds to see them before they rapidly swim out of view. I got to go in for two times, so I saw about 30 seconds to a minute of whale shark total on the whole trip. This was a great experience filled with whale Sharks and a fun crew. We had two dives in the water and saw sharks both times. The gear and boat were good quality and we highly recommend this crew.

The great reviews this tour company has did not come close to matching our experience. Buyer beware. No concern for passenger safety in rough water or help in getting in or out of the water when it was clearly needed. How the passengers were talked to was not acceptable. The seas were extremely rough and in hindsight was not safe at all. The trip should have been postponed, but was not. We had a 1.5 hour trip in the roughest seas. It was like a roller coaster with us all coming up off our seats at times (I actually found that part fun). 3 of 10 people were hanging over the side by the time we got to the whale shark sighting. That’s not the operators fault; however, how the passengers were treated in these high seas was not acceptable. Safety of the passengers was nothing this crew even considered. They did not tell anyone to get fins, and mask on to get ready. They just started yelling at the first 2 groups to get in get in. There were no instructions on how to safely get out of the boat. My son was knocked back into the boat a couple of times all while being yelled at to get up. No help in getting him up or helping anyone get into the water with the boat rocking so badly. It’s amazing no one was seriously hurt. When it came time for my husband and I to get in, I tried to step up to jump in and was knocked to the floor of the boat straight in my knee and ankle. I laid there for a while until the pain subsided enough to check my joints. No help or concern from the captain, just the passengers who weren’t heaving over the side of the boat. The single whale shark disappeared into the deep and the 4 snorkelers were told to get in the boat. No help in taking fins or getting up the ladder in rough seas. All 4 snorkelers threw up once on board (not the boat or crews fault). We were now up to 7 of 10 passengers heaving over the side. One person polled the group about heading back and all agreed it wasn’t worth it to stay. She politely requested multiple times to just head back since most weren’t in any shape to snorkel at that point. He didn’t listen to her and when she begged him again, he told her it was his boat, it’s not a private tour, and she can’t tell them what to do. They hunted for the whale shark again for about 10 min. I realized my husband and I still had our fins on (still in shock of all that had transpired) and may have been the cause of him thinking he should continue searching. We took them off and requested we head back since we were not risking getting in the water. He finally agreed to it after getting agreement from all there would be no refund. Four passengers got off and didn’t finish out the rest of the tour (lunch and island visit). Several swore they would never get on another boat again and it was the worst day of their life. Six of us went ahead and had our light lunch and stood in the water trying to avoid running outboards from other boats as they left. The fresh ceviche with chips was delicious and was the highlight of the trip. Safety of passengers should be any tour operators priority. For this crew it was not. Thankfully, the passengers all helped each other out as best they could. None of the passengers would have gone out on the boat had we all known the conditions and the crew. That was clearly stated by all.I want to start out by saying I have NEVER rated anyone below 4 stars. I believe in giving tours the benefit of the doubt. I want to start out by saying I have NEVER rated anyone below 4 stars. I believe in giving tours the benefit of the doubt. As well I would like to preface that I grew up boating and scuba diving and doing extreme sports. I believe this was an adventure but I want people to be WARNED. Wow. I can not express how horrific this tour was. There is no world where it was safe for us to go out into this storm and the unprofessionalism from the tour guides was just astonishing. We started out by driving on an hour and half trek to the whale sharks in waves that were AWFUl! It was incredibly unsafe and there was no care from the crew on making sure people were being safe. I felt like I needed to throw up so he told me to get to the back of the boat to puke. There was no assistance from the crew and other tour guests had to help me back there after falling down several times. One girl started puking and there was no sympathy from the crew just “make sure to get it over the side and not on the boat”. As time went on, more and more people started puking. He told us we were going to jump in the water in groups of 2 so we were paired up. Once we got to the whale sharks (there was no indication that we needed to prepare to get our equipment on) he started screaming “EVERYONE JUMP IN, EVERYONE JUMP IN” with no indication of how to or where to go and no help getting in the water. I slipped and fell several times trying to just get off the boat in anyway possible and I got screamed at to “GET UP! GO!” And no help or indication that there was any care for my well-being. Once I finally just fell off the boat he started yanking and pulling me to the shark and the waves several times almost smacked me into the boat. After I got in, my mother tried to get off the boat but slipped and fell, hitting her knee and totally messing up her ankle. Initially she was in so much pain that she couldn’t get up with fear she broke something. There was no help from the captain or any of the crew and the other passengers were trying to help as much as possible. It was hard to breath with a snorkel that was malfunctioning and filling with salt water. We caught a glimpse of one whale shark for 10 seconds. After that he came above water and started yelling and screaming to get back on the boat. After trying and trying and physical stress I was able to make it back and he started screaming to take my fins off with no assistance. I just threw my fins on the boat because no one was there to take it. Once everyone got back on the boat (only 4 of the 10 made it off the boat in time) everyone that was In the water was instantly sick. This caused the other people to not want to go in the water and started just begging for them to take us back. The tour guide ignored and at one point said “this is my boat”. There was no regard for our well-being or desires. Then finally he started saying “NO REFUND NO REFUND” and we all said we understood. Still they weren’t leaving and someone else on the group was PLEADING for us to leave. It took 10 minutes of this for them to finally start heading back. There were several other moments where it was very clear there was no care for our safety but I think I’ve said enough to get my point across. The one plus was the ceviche was good after the whole experience. If anyone knows me they know I’m incredibly optimistic and always try to look on the bright side but I was just so dumbfounded. 7/10 people on the boat were throwing up and there was just no indication of care. I’m shocked by these reviews. Book at your own discretion, I won’t say “don’t book with these people” because obviously there have been some good experiences but take this information as you will.We were guided by Carols Martinez who helped us genuinely to find us an amazing package !
