What to expect
Prepare to experience a relaxing paddle adventure in a cedar strip canoe. Guided by a certified knowledgeable local guide you will be plying the waters of Pyramid Lake at the base of Pyramid Mountain, experiencing the laid-back mode of transportation used in Canada for generations.
After a quick on-shore learn to paddle session and being suited up with a PFD we are ready to go. Departing from the sandy beach at Pyramid Lake Resort you can experience a 2.5 to 3 hour trip on a 25 foot long locally sourced handcrafted cedar strip canoe. Built for maximum stability and stocked with an ample supply of blankets and outerwear for those cool mornings this canoe is a comfortable craft for groups of up to 8 people.
The tour circumnavigates a clear mountain lake taking in classic Rocky Mountain vistas, wildlife viewing opportunities, and a shore-side stop halfway through the tour for a chance to stretch our legs and have shore side snacks including fruit, baked goods, and a coffee and tea service. After the break which perchance may have included a swim on a sandy beach, we continue on the last leg of the tour finishing back at our point of departure.

One of the highlights of our 2 week Rockies trip. Mike was a really nice guy and kept you totally confident that you are doing a great job of canoeing around Pyramid Lake. En route from the pick up at our hotel to the lake, we told him of our unsuccessful dawn and dusk road trips out into the wilder bits of countryside to spot a bear. He took us on a loop of the lake in the van, pointing out common sighting points along the way. And guess what.... We didn't see a bear. But using his tips, the next evening we were lucky enough to see a mother and her cub along the side of the road on the way to Medicine Lake (which is beautiful at dusk by the way). Not another car around, so we were able to sit around quietly for a good few minutes watching them forage. The canoe trip itself is very peaceful and a lovely 3 hours. The canoe is well big enough to feel totally safe in. All the normal safety gear plus blankets if it is chilly and binoculars to have a look at any wildlife. We managed to see and get some really nice photos of an Osprey. No classic fish catching shot, but hey ho, there's always next time. Hot chocolate and some flapjacks during a half time stopover at the far end of the lake, supplied by Mike from The Bear's Paw Bakery in town provided the energy for the paddle back . A really pleasant evening in really pleasant company. I'd seriously recommend Wild Current Outfitters. Great knowledge of and passion for the local area. Thanks for the memories. SteveGreat visit with Mike. He such a friendly and very knowledgeable guide. We had the best weather, very sunny and not a breath of wind. Great visit with Mike. He such a friendly and very knowledgeable guide. We had the best weather, very sunny and not a breath of wind. This a very pleasurable gentle paddle round a very beautiful lake. The views are truly memorable. Only small groups of 4 or 6 so it’s very intimate. We saw ospreys, loons, kingfishers muskrats and grebes. The coffee and cakes on bikini beach were fantastic Thanks again Mike and we will surely return.
