What to expect
Our Safari Float on the Peñas Blancas river offers a relaxing way to enjoy the abundant wildlife surrounding the banks of this lush paradise. Use your hands to take pictures of the rain-forest canopy teeming with monkeys or take a closer look of a tropical bird with your binoculars while you float with us in the oar boat where our guide paddle and you relax like the iguanas nearby sunning themselves on the branches.
The trip begins with a twenty minutes drive from Fortuna to the river. Guests will float down the river for duration of approximately two hours during which they will have an opportunity to sight much of Costa Rica’s famous wildlife and have an interactive conversation with the guide. At the end of the river portion of this trip guests will arrive at a local working farm where the owner is a well-known Costa Rican horse breeder and trainer. His wife makes delicious homemade typical snacks and serves these treats with our world-renowned coffee made the old-fashioned way in a special “sock”. If you prefer juice over coffee, there is something for everyone’s desires. By the way, everything you eat at this farm comes directly from their land to you.

We had an amazing morning float safari on the Pena Blancas river January 3 with Roy of Green Vacations Costa Rica. We started out with a pickup from our resort. We had not even left the property when we had our first stop for an animal encounter- a sloth in a tree. We arrived at the launching site where we met the friendly dogs on the property as our guide prepared the raft. Roy impressed us with his ability to spot birds and other critters as we floated down the river and we were fascinated by the information he shared about the animals, birds and plants that we passed. I appreciated that he encouraged me to focus on taking pictures while he and my sons paddled us into place to get the best views. The entire experience was incredible. Floating down a beautiful river, not knowing what we would find around the next bend was simultaneously relaxing and exciting and peaceful. Except when it wasn’t. Hearing the troops of howler monkeys calling out loudly was exhilarating. We saw exotic birds perched and in flight. Anhingas, herons, pipers, a turkey vulture and a TOUCAN!!! We passed under several large troops of howler and capuchin monkeys. We spotted iguanas and bats. My son has a degree in wildlife biology and forestry, and I am an avid bird watcher, so this excursion was a perfect for us, but the wildlife float safari is a must-do for anyone who loves nature and wants to witness the incredible diversity of animals and plants that inhabit the rainforest. The landing point is at a local working farm where we were served a delicious snack of cheese, fried plantains, cassava bread and coffee. Everything we consumed was grown and produced on site! The bird-watching tour did not stop when we left the river. I was distracted from the food by the flowers that attracted gorgeous hummingbirds and a feeding station where colorful tropical birds came to feast on fruit and nuts. I want to send a special shout-out to the exceptional booking staff at Green Vacations. We appreciated that the company was very responsive and compassionate with us when we had to reschedule and change our plans with them due to the COVID-19 situation and a recent family tragedy. We were originally scheduled to come to Costa Rica in March 2020. At that time, we had booked Green Vacations Combo Tour (Mistico Hanging Bridges, Volcano Hike and La Fortuna Waterfall), the Wildlife Float Safari and we had privately contracted them to transport us from our resort in Arenal to Playa Flamingo. We postponed our visit to Costa Rica the day before we were supposed to leave and cancelled the two tours with full refunds, but asked Green Vacations if we could keep the money we paid for the transfer to use when we rescheduled the trip. We rescheduled for March 2021, postponed once again due to the global COVID situation and rescheduled the trip for New Years week since that was when my sons would be able to travel. Tragically, my husband passed away unexpectedly this summer. When we contacted Green Vacations to see if they were still able to provide the transfer we arranged with them previously, they told me that they no longer offered that service but would honor our agreement. I was impressed that they were willing to go the extra mile (pun intended), but I asked if we could use the money we prepaid in 2020 to reserve the transfer to book an excursion instead. They offered a few interesting options and we settled on the float safari. They told me that we had paid more than what it would cost the 3 of us for the excursion and suggested a couple of add-ons to the trip, but I asked if we could buy out the raft and just have the 3 of us and our guide. My family really appreciated the flexibility of working with Green Vacations, and their prompt responses to all of my inquiries and requests over the past 2 years. Muchas Gracias!Great guid great weather monkeys and wonderful food a gentle relaxing ride down a beautiful river with many troops of howler monkeys
