This was the best start to a tour I have done so far. Desy was communicative, and gave clear instructions of when and where she would meet me. It was a very comprehensive tour with a trip to the fresh food markets - the people there were friendly and Desy gave information about what she was buying. Then it was a short trip (by Indonesian standards!) to Desy's house, where we were met by her Husband who provided us with fresh coconuts with a straw and spoon to eat the flesh. The house/kitchen was simple but adequate for our cooking - and we got to work chopping, grating and grinding under Desy's keen eye. We cooked the meal they use for special occasions, which involved a lot of dishes using fresh herbs and spices. The finished meal was very tasty and beautifully presented. I will now appreciate the preparation of the traditional Indonesian meals more, knowing how much preparation goes into them. Thank you Desy, I wish you well in your future cooking classes. Widi picked us up at our Hostel in the morning and we drove to a local market in Yogyakarta where we bought some spices for the meal and some tea to enjoy after eating. After that we drove to his village and were greeted by his wife Desy. We prepared some shrimp fritters for starters and could snack on them while preparing the rest of the food. Desy showed us all the cooking tricks so we were able to get hands on while cooking. In between we were able to ask all our questions about the food and the indonesian culture. All in all we had a wonderful morning! Thank you so much, Desy and Widi, for inviting us in your home! Going to the market and cooking with you was honestly the best experience in Indonesia so far! All of the food was amazing and we loved talking to you all morning and getting to know you and your home country :) we will definitely cook the dish for our families when we're back home. It was a pleasure meeting you and we wish you all the best! Nora & LeonWe had a wonderful day with ms Desy! We had a wonderful day with ms Desy! First visiting the big Pasar Beringhardjo market in the centre of Yogya market, finding the ingredients for todays cooking class. Always nice to see the fresh herbs, vegetables and fruits piled in neat heaps and hear the sellers promoting their products. Then we continued to the house of ms Desy in the Bantul area, which is a typical rural area amidst the rice and peanutfields and fruit trees everywhere. The cooking class started with learning about the ingredients for todays meal, especially the ‘tumpeng’, a yellow rice mountain, which is usually prepared for special occasions as weddings or celebrating new year. Besides this we prepared ayam goreng and some side dishes with tempeh and tahu (dau fu). Also some incredibly nice corn cookies where on the menu. Ms Desy enthusiastically told ens explained how to make the dishes and we had an exceptionally nice meal, I can recommend the cooking class of ms Desy, to learn about the traditional way of preparing an Indonesian meal, but also to take part in a day of an Indonesian family!
