Truly one of the most incredible experiences of my life! My husband and I booked the private 2-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu through Trexperience because of the great reviews, and they exceeded every expectation. We were lucky enough to have Vincent as our guide – he was the best! He was a wonderful storyteller, a patient and encouraging guide, and very flexible with personalizing the experience for us. He had an answer for every question we had, and would occasionally ask us questions that we wouldn't know the answer to – resulting in some of the most ridiculous jokes I've ever heard. Vincent also had a true respect and reverence for his history and traditional Inca customs, it was a beautiful experience to learn from him. We couldn't have asked for a better guide to lead us to Machu Picchu! Before starting the trail, we decided to stay overnight in Ollantaytambo to have a later wake up time (7AM pickup instead of 4AM, highly recommend). We decided to go with the private tour instead of a group because we wanted to go at our own pace, and honestly it wasn't that much more expensive than the group tour – especially worth it when we considered the level of effort to get out there in the first place. We started the day on the Panoramic train to KM 104. Try to get seats on the side by the river. It's beautiful from every angle, but that was definitely the place to get the best views. After getting off the train, we crossed the bridge and were greeted by an Andean Motmot! Such a lucky bird sighting! We were also fortunate to do the hike at the end of April, there were thousands of different orchids blooming on the trail. Right away, you encounter the Inca Site of Chachabamba, directly across the river. It's a great start to the trail before the ascent. The first half of the hike up to Wiñay Wayna was entirely uphill, it's challenging but definitely doable. For reference, my husband and I are in our early-30s and moderately fit – we exercise regularly, but nothing can really prepare you for the altitude. Definitely stay in Cusco a couple days, drink lots of coca tea, and do what you need to do to adjust. After about 2.5 hours, we entered into a shaded area with a beautiful waterfall that we took a nice rest at. About 20 minutes from there, we reached Wiñay Wayna! This site alone is seriously worth the effort, it's unbelievable from every direction. From there, the trail becomes a lot easier. Not as much continuous incline, Vincent referred to this part as "Inca flat" (basically quick ups and downs for the remainder of the hike). After one last push up a couple of daunting staircases, we reached the Sun Gate! It's a surreal and spiritual experience, I can't really put into words how special it was to see Machu Picchu in the distance. A little bit more walking from Intipunku, and we arrived at the bus station to be transported to Aguas Claientes. The next morning, we woke up early and hopped on the same bus to be taken back to Machu Picchu. We had reserved tickets to climb Huayna Picchu, which we were feeling a bit nervous about, but I am so glad we did it. Honestly, the view at the top was worth every single stair to get up there. There were so many beautiful orchids, butterflies, and birds that provided great incentive (an excuse) to take rests on the way up. A true highlight of the experience! We still had plenty of time in Machu Picchu itself to see all of the temples and walk through the ruins. When our time was up, we said goodbye and hopped on the panoramic train in Aguas Calientes to return to Cusco in time for dinner and an early night of sleep. This experience provided me with two of the best days of my life, and I could not recommend it more highly. A huge part of our experience was sharing it with Vincent, and I would absolutely recommend traveling with him if you can. We're already planning on coming back to do the 4-day trail with him in the future! Until then, my husband and I will cherish the memories made on this unforgettable trip.First-time Peru travellers, we were drawn to Trexperience because of their good reviews and because they’re locally-owned. First-time Peru travellers, we were drawn to Trexperience because of their good reviews and because they’re locally-owned. We went with the 2D/1N camping option because we wanted the hiking experience but because we were also unsure of the physical toll (recently-problematic knee) of the 4-day trek. As it turns out, the 2D/1N hiking experience is very doable (12km on a mostly gradual ascent). Makes me want to come back for the 4D trek! Good up-front communication with the details of the trip clearly laid out in English. Our guide, Sonya, was fantastic. Warm, friendly, and all-knowing with respect to Inca history. The pace was easy, as was the conversation along the way. For people trying to decide between the camping option and the slightly cheaper hotel option, the difference - as far as I can make out - is that the camping option means travelling with porters who lay out mind-blowing & stomach-filling spreads along the way (2B, 1L, 1D). It was far more lavish than we imagined and made us wonder how we’d be able to continue hiking with such a full stomachs! We’re normally accustomed to ‘pack your own lunches’ to hiking. The camping location is at the valley bottom alongside the sacred Urubamba River. Tents, sleeping bags, deluxe mattresses all provided. It was pretty cool waking up to coca tea and a vertical view up through the clouds to Machu Picchu high above. Short walk back to nearby Aguas Calientes to catch the bus back up to Machu Picchu. You definitely want to arrive early (and we did) because the crowds filing their way through Machu Picchu can get quite long. One of the things we really appreciated about this package was that we got to see Machu Picchu twice, once at the end of the first day (at the end of the Inca Trail) and once more the second day when we had ample time (2-3hrs) to leisurely explore the site. This worked out to our advantage because the first day was sunny and clear while the second day was misty (and mysterious). Truly, the best of both experiences. Another thing we really enjoyed about the 2D option was that it was a very personal experience. Given the popularity of the 4-day trek, the groups can get large (a dozen or so?). For the 2D trek, it was just the two of us and our guide. There was room for more, but we were the only ones that day. Same for the next trek after us. The result was a very personalized experience. We set our own pace, stopped when we wanted, and had easy, direct access to our guide, Sonya. It felt like a private tour even though we didn’t pay for one. The only reason I didn’t give this 5/5 stars (apart from being a hard marker!) is that there were a few (very) minor hiccups with some logistical pieces that Sonya and the porters were adeptly able to manage in the moment. Overall, we felt like we were in very good hands from start to finish. I recommend Trexperience and would definitely consider using them again if/when we return for the 4-day trek. For context, we’re a father-son travel duo, ages 50 & 18. We both exercise regularly and enjoy being outdoors. All aspects of the trip were within our physical limits and comfort level.fantastic tour with Sonia! We went with TreXperience on the two-day Inca Trail incl. Machu Picchu. Unfortunately in the time of the trip, local farmers declared a strike for 2 days and closed all ways from and to Cusco as well as they prohibited the train to leave to Aguas Calientes (here is the starting point to Machu Picchu trip). Our agency reacted very fast and transported us to Aguas Calientes a day before, rebooked the train, found a guide who went with us one day sooner so that we can do our trip as planned. Like 90% of agencies canceled the trip and tourists had to stay 2 days in Cusco doing nothing or because of thight schedule missed Machu Picchu. Other few agencies took the tourists to Ollantayambo, a place from which you took a train to Machu Picchu. But because the train didn't leave, their trips were also canceled. We were very lucky that our agency thought about all possible scenarios and reacted quickly. The same happened on the way back. When the agency found out from their local sources that the train will still not leave the stations, they immediately found another way how to get us from Aguas Calientes back to Cusco, so that we don't have to stay there and pay for an additional night in hotel. Really really amazing 🤩 What I would recommend all tourists - if you travel with any agency, but they don't pick you up at your hotel, but you meet with them at the Ollantayambo train station, go to the ticket sales office and let them print your tickets. Your agency have your tickets for sure, but the station and boarding to train is crazy, it's totally chaotic and if you don't find your agency on time, you will still have your tickets and can board the train. At the train sales office, they print you the tickets at no costs, they already have your name and personal details in the system.
