Geres National Park with its stunning mountain views, waterfalls and lagoons is well worth the visit. This tour serves as a great introduction to the park. We traveled in an air-conditioned van with a small group of 7 guests and our local guide Rui Lago. Rui was very warm and friendly. He made sure to introduce all us guests to each other at the start of the tour which created a pleasant atmosphere with lots of good exchange. The smallness of our international little group (Swedish, Canadian, French and Portugese) made the trip cozy and intimate. Throughout the tour Rui shared little snippets of the history of the region and the park (in both English and French). We made several stops: one to look at an historical bridge from Napoleon times, another to walk through an old mountain village, another to eat a picnic lunch and swim in a beautiful green freshwater lagoon (in my opinion the highlight of the trip!), another to buy ice cream and another to visit a view point from which we could see almost all the way to Spain. Rui catered the stops and hikes to the wishes and abilities of the group as a whole. Since we had an older member (60+) with a bad step we didn't do one of the more challenging hikes to a waterfall, but we still had plenty to see. From my perspective as a young person, the hikes were easy and short (walking in sandals was not a problem), probably suitable for children aged 6+. That said, our older member with the bad step had two falls. Hence, if you are 60+ and unsure of your step/have a bad knee/similar, it may be a good idea to wear proper hiking shoes (with ankle support) and inform the guide so they can walk in front of you while holding both your hands through the steep, slippery and rocky parts (Rui was an absolute rock and did this once he realized it was needed!).We booked this tour for our second day in Porto - we prefer scenic tours to cities, so thought that this would make a good contrast with the hustle and bustle Porto. We booked this tour for our second day in Porto - we prefer scenic tours to cities, so thought that this would make a good contrast with the hustle and bustle Porto. We were picked up at the station, near to our hotel, and after a few more stops headed 90 minutes into the National park, were we made several stops for short walk to waterfalls, views, round an old town, etc. We picked up picnic lunches and headed to a river where most of us got in for a swim, before more stops, more photos and a drive home. It was a good day out, good to see some scenery and do some short hikes and the swim was the highlight as it was a hot day. The picnic lunch was plentiful though a little random, Our guide, Petito was excellent, driving and looking after us all, and talking to all of the group in a variety of languages. It was about 6.30 by the time we all got home, in perfect time to go out for the evening, refreshed and read for more stomping around Porto.
